Re: High View (hotel)

By Geoffrey Mead on 08/08/2017 at 19:43

Kelly's 1969 has the hotel was at 10/11/12/13 Montpelier Street which is on the west side. Much earlier in the 1914 Kelly's these numbers are respectively apartments, a dressmaker, a builder, apartments. In fact 12 addresses are listed as apartments at that time in Montpelier Street, so not surprising that a hotel developed from a sequence of houses. Housing was in chronically short supply in the years leading up to WWI and after the War, so there was money to be made in letting and sub-letting rooms to accommodate a rising population. No state funded housing at that time all private housing apart from a few charitable bodies such as Peabody and Guinness Trusts.
