Where I first fell in love

Brenda – my first love

My first memory of Bear Rd was when I was three years old; we lived at number 183. There were four adults and two kids living there, me and my brother Terrence slept on the living room floor. I clearly remember when I fell off my Raleigh tricycle, and a young girl by the name of Brenda Scarse, I think that’s how you spell it, came to my rescue. That was the first time I fell in love. My next memory is Coronation Day, when everyone in the road dressed up. My Mum dressed me as a clown.

We won the pools

Our flat was on the ground floor, we had two small bedrooms, one at the front and another at the back, with the living room in between. The kitchen with small scullery was situated at the back. Our galvanised bath tub sat on the wall by the back door. The privee was right at the back, which meant going outside and walking up the garden path. What memories, happy ones, with very little money, until Dad won the pools in 1956 and we moved to Rottingdean.

Do you remember?

  • I live at 183 now! Not sure how so many people squeezed in as its not big! Would be great if you had any old photos of the inside?
