I attended 1961/68

There are many comments made by pupils here with many memories of particular teachers or events. My time at the grammar school was 1961-1968, and during this period two photographs were taken in 1962 and 1966. I was only in the July 1966 one, the same month when England won the FIFA World Cup, as I believe I was off sick with chicken pox for the 1962 one.

Fond memories

I look back with really fond memories of my time at BHASGS particularly enjoying the sports available as I was not very academic. The main sports master was Mike Smith who later became Manager of the Egypt and Wales national football teams and he took Wales to the quarter finals of the 1976 European Football Championship. Another sports master was Mike Yaxley who spent a number of years at Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club as their physiotherapist including when ‘The Seagulls’ played against Manchester United in the FA Cup Final in 1983. Both of these masters are in the photo.

If you recognise yourself or someone else, or can share your memories of this time, please leave a comment below.

Sports excellence

Many of the pupils excelled at sport and two of my friends, also in the photo, are John Spencer who played cricket for Sussex, and Peter Munro who played football for England Schoolboys. I am sure many other pupils went on to have successful careers so I hope I can look forward to reading comments from fellow Old Boys.

Past & Present Association

Quite a few of my year group still meet up in Hove quarterly for a drink and curry as well as attending the annual school reunion lunch.  This year the lunch will be held on the 12 July 2014 and anyone interested can find further information here. Also anyone who attended the grammar school or the 6th form college can join the Past & Present Association.

  • ‘Absque Labore Nihil’. Nick says he was not very academic but more so than me! as I left under a cloud in 1966 having scraped my lowly 5 ‘O’Levels at the second attempt. (I have since gained my BA, MA and in 2012 my PhD!) Lots of reminiscence about ‘The Grammar’ elsewhere on this site which brings back to mind old friends and masters and even Chichester House members like Nick (shame you weren’t in my celebrated Smith House…)

  • Well done Nick, I’m very pleased to see another photo. Hopefully there will be more. A lot of the teachers are unknown to me, but quite a few of the old ones are still there, Dim Jim, Jack & Killer. Good to see them!

  • Good initiative. It is really good to see one more of these school photos again. I wonder if anyone has access to the one of 1960, as I didn’t think to order a copy at the time? The memories of BHSGS are fine ones. I became a teacher afterwards and I don’t think that I ever experienced another school which ever came close to this. Such are the recollections from youth. Of course, in the light of experience, one could have made so much more of the time spent there, but then.
