This group of likely lads were the 1957 Carden Junior School Football team.
Kevin Gillespie is third from the left standing.

I can’t add any names here but certainly recognise the teachers, and a few other faces here. The football is inscribed with ’58-’59 so it may be just the year later than proposed?

I would say the photo was taken in 1959 Jennifer. Following normal protocol, the years on the football indicate the season 1958-59 in which the fine trophy pictured was won. The photo would, of course, have been taken after the winning and awarding of the trophy i.e. in the summer of 1959. Regards, Alan
Mr Emmans, the Headmaster, is the teacher on the right. Good to see his face again, he was a nice man.
The teacher on the left is Mr Cheeseman – a good teacher who worked hard with the football team. The boy front extreme right is Billy Perrin. He was a great footballer and playing with the other guys a year older, I think. I’m sure Barry Wright is in there somewhere but my memory fails me on which one. Barry scored lots of goals! I can’t name any of the team but I immediately recognized Mr. Cheeseman and Mr. Emmens. Mr. C was my teacher in the 4th year. Billy Perrin’s sister, Mary, was in my classes at Carden and then we went to Margaret Hardy together. I don’t recall if Billy was older than us or the other way round. Mary now lives in Sydney, Australia. It could be Barry Wright 2nd from the right in the front row. Did he live in Crabtree Avenue and have a Birthday on Christmas day? Funny the random things we recall, isn’t it? Rosie Roser (nee Tullet).
You are right about Emmans & Cheeseman. The boy at 2nd right in the back row is my brother Michael Griffiths, who went on to Brighton Grammar School in 1959. I suspect that this is a 1959 picture when Mick was 11 years old.
Philip, I believe that you and your family lived almost opposite us in Westfield Crescent, next to the “army houses” as we used to call them. We were at number 77 and I think that Michael was in my class.
I was in the infant then junior school when Mr Emmans was Headmaster. I was there from 1957 until 1962. I was nine when we moved from Hollingbury to London. Our family lived at 7, Warnham Rise, my name was Valerie Shaw and I had a brother or sister in each of the 3 years after me – Alan, Julia & Michael. I loved that school, I remember friends John Killick and Geoffrey Thorogood. Teachers sometimes didn’t think he was thoroughly good, especially Mrs Bolton. Geoffrey once got told off and wouldn’t sit down until she said he could sit next to me, I am sure it’s because he wanted to copy my work! I also remember Brian Green; Peter Lapiski (I think he had the role of Joseph the year I was Mary in the Nativity play); Catherine Devine; Gillian Ferris; Judith (surname?) and Graham (surname?). I wonder if anyone remembers me or my brothers & sister? I offered the services of my newborn baby sister to play the role of Jesus one year, poor little thing was only about 10 weeks old. Geoffrey lived at the top of Warnham Rise and the Barnetts lived next door to us. Christine, Susan (Sue was less than a week older than me but in the year above at school) and Kevin he was in the same year as one of my brothers or sister. Some of the other children thought we were Chinese as we all had very black smooth hair. I used to go to ballet & tap lessons near Fiveways until the teacher said I was too tall for ballet (at the time I thought she was mad, there were ballerinas a lot taller than I was) so instead I started ice skating. I might have gone ice skating with Catherine or Judith. I often visit Brighton and went to look at the house (from outside) with Julia, in Warnham Rise just last year, it still seemed lovely in Hollingbury – Julia wondered why we had ever moved away!
Hi Valerie, yes I remember you well. As you say you had very black long hair and glasses if I recall. When you left Carden you bought the whole class a packet of sweets each which I think was a great treat and a nice surprise.

Also, Hi to Rosie Roser! Just seen your 2016 comments after all these years!!! Mick & I did indeed live at no 108 Westfield Cres, next to the army houses, just as you say. Was your surname different back then?… can’t remember too much about who lived around us so long ago but remember that the local kids would play football in the road & ride pedal scooters down the steep section of pavement.
