Want to be a Hove 'Angel'?

This week, Mayor of Brighton and Hove City Council, Councillor Mo Marsh, planted one of the final trees to complete the Hove Civic Society Street Tree Planting for Portland Road. The planting scheme comprises fourteen disease resistant Elms to be planted on the northern side of Portland Road roughly between School Road and St Patrick’s Road. The planting is funded by Hove Civic Society with support from West Hove Forum, Hove Business Federation, Brighton and Hove Heritage Commission.

One hundred new trees

Planning and raising the funds for the planting has taken some time and this is the latest street tree planting project under Hove Civic Society’s campaign ‘Restoring our Victorian Street Tree Heritage’. Since the start of the campaign in 2012, the Society has been able to raise sufficient funds to support nearly 100 new street trees in Hove.

Danger of townscape erosion

Chairman of Hove Civic Society, Helmut Lusser, said: “Following the decimation of the street tree budget for the city, we are in danger of fundamentally eroding our townscape in Hove. Hove Civic Society is now calling on people of Hove to support our initiative, to become members of the tree planting scheme, to initiate planting in their streets and to contribute to our funds by becoming street tree Angels (funding one tree a year) or Cherubs (funding ½ tree). By helping us grow our initiative we can make a significant long-term beneficial impact on the environment in Hove.”
