Hosier and drapers

This photograph was taken in 1950 and as you can see it was a hosier and drapers shop.

  • Hosiers and draperies sold stockings and socks (hose), fabric items such as ribbons, handkerchiefs, etc., and sewing equipment such as needles and thread, lengths of elastic, etc. Some also sold underwear, especially corsetry. I don’t remember this particular shop, but there was another drapers shop round the corner in Bristol Gardens in the 1960s where you could buy replacement fastenings with which to mend a bra.
