Downs County Primary School

Class photos 1958/59 to 1960/61

By Alan Hobden

I joined Mr Hinton's Class 2A 1958/59 when I moved to Brighton in March 1959. At that time it was in the annexe in Florence Place, across the Ditchling Road from the main school. I believe that the wooden building is now called Tilbury House and used by the NHS Trust.

If you recognise yourself or anyone else and can share your memories, please leave a comment below.

I then moved into the main building for Mr Dibben's Class 3A 1959/60, and Miss Cox's Class 4A 1960/61.I was also in the School Athletics Team in 1958/59 and 1959/60, the School Football Team in 1960/61, and the School Choir 1960/61. Phil Allsopp has already posted a photo for Class 4A 1960/61, and I hope these additional photos from my collection will bring back some happy memories.

I left Downs school in 1959, when our family moved to Westdene, and I joined Patcham school. I recognise some of the people in these pictures, namely Sue Gunn who worked at the Argus, as I did around 1966 to 1972. Also Derek Forder, Chris Mahoney and some of the other faces are familiar but their names don't spring to mind.

I was in the Annexe from '59 to '62 and did not find myself in the photos. Does anybody remember me?

The soccer team sparked some memories, and amazingly some names: Jeremy Marsh, Derek Forder, Howard Dunk, Colin ?, ? Alan Chris Mahoney, Peter Whitcombe, Neil with the ball?, John Short? Jimmy Green?

Re: 1960/61 soccer team Terry, I think the back row (l to r) is probably: Jeremy Marsh, Derek Forder, Howard Dunk, Colin Burtenshaw, Alan Hobden. Middle row: Chris Mahoney, David Stoner, Neil Johnson, John Green, Alan Bowyer. Front row: Unknown, Peter Whitcomb. So just the one boy in the front row to identify! Regards, Alan.

Chris Brencher, left middle row. Chris Mahoney, left bottom row.

Yes, of course Michael. Thanks for the corrections. So the 1960/61 Football Team was: Back row (l to r) Jeremy Marsh, Derek Forder, Howard Dunk, Colin Burtenshaw, Alan Hobden. Middle row (l to r) Chris Brencher, David Stoner, Neil Johnson, John Green, Alan Bowyer. Front row: Chris Mahoney, Peter Whitcomb. Regards, Alan.

Thanks Alan for remembering me. I have lived in Canada now since 1974. It's great to see those old photos.

Great photos, Alan!  Thanks for posting them. Marvelous days looking back to the Downs School.  John Green and I have remained close friends since we met at the Downs Infants School. My wife, Lauren, and I spent a wonderful week with him and his wife, Constance, in Eastbourne last fall.

I used to go to the Downs School 1959/62.  I can see my Sister and her twin brother, Rosalind and Jonathon Bury. I can recognise the Cole twins standing at the back  and Davina (?). My sis is 2nd to the left of Mr Hinton in class 2a photo. Jonny is 4th from the right on the front row in the school choir photo. Fond memories - I can still smell the floor polish of the hall .. even now!!

Hello Phil. Regarding the elusive John Colwell, could he be the boy between you and Colin Burtenshaw in Mr Hinton's Class 2A photo from 1958/59? Regards, Alan

By Alan Hobden (08/02/2016)

Hello Alan. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - the elusive John Colwell isn't in the picture.  The chap between me and Colin Burtenshaw is Stephen Kuc.  He used to live on the southern half of Cleveland Road on the west side of Blaker's Park.  I recall he went into the Parachute regiment after leaving school early.  While we were at the Down School, Stephen had the best six shooters I'd ever seen - two chromed beauties with red pistol grips.  He lived with his mother - a single Mum who was a very kindly lady.
