  • South end of Queens Road opposite where Boots is now, early 1980’s probably.

  • That’s certainly the location, but I’d say it’s earlier than 1980 – probably mid ’70s.

  • My 1974 Kelly’s Directory shows British School of Motoring (on the left in the mystery photo) occupying No 4 Queen’s Road, Brighton. Next door at No 5 was Period Decor (Sussex) Ltd.

I assume that Virgin took over at No 5 after that.

  • This would have been at least 1985, as you can see Phil Collins’ No Jacket Required (1985) and Madonna’s Like A Virgin (1984) in the window.

  • 5 Queen’s Road is right, and this is 1985 as I see a Tears For Fears album from 1985 in the window too. This one closed in mid/late 85, I think, when they moved onto Western Road (currently Argos).

  • 5 Queen’s Road was occupied by my late maternal great grandfather and grandfather’s business, E. Wigelsworth Ltd (Ladies’ & Gent’s Tailors and Gent’s outfitters) in the 1940’s. I seem to recall talk of Grandpa selling/leasing the premises to Richard Branson in the early 1970s but not sure if that is 100% correct.

  • Am I right in thinking that this was Richard Bransons shop before he became a multi millionaire?

  • This was the second Virgin store in Brighton after the first one, on the corner of Queens Road and North Street where Boots is now, closed.

  • Yes Richard, I believe his first record shop was in London and the second (from early 1970’s) was in Brighton where Boots now is. It moved across the road (as photo) about late 1970’s and then moved again to the old Boots store in Western Road when they moved to their new store on the old Virgin site…….merry go rounds!
