Class photo

This is a class photograph taken at Patcham Secondary Modern School in 1956.

I am the first girl on the left 2nd row dark top with a white trim. I am sitting next to a very good friend named Frances Clarke.

Do you recognise yourself or anyone else? Can you share your memories of this tim with us? If you can help, please leave a comment below.

  • My name was Brenda Mells, I am 4th from the left. I think Pat Taylor is 1st on the right sitting down second row. We were very good friends and neighbours.

  • My family was given a newly built council house in Hollingbury and we moved when I was about to  take my 11+ examination. Carden School was very different to Finsbury Road School. I was a bit lost and was sent to Patcham Senior School. It all happened very quickly.

  • Mary Smith, did your family live in Midhurst Rise?

  • To Brenda Patrick, did your mother work for A.A.G Smith in his grocery shop in Shaftesbury Road, on the corner of Clyde Road (formerly Mr Barber) as I worked there too?

  • If I may be so bold I think I can answer your question, Michael. I was at school with Brenda’s sister and we would spend our holidays ice skating, at the movies etc. On one occasion we were to stop off in Shaftesbury Road to call on her mother as this was where she worked, at that time.

  • To Brenda Patrick (nee Mells) is the girl to your left Patricia Thynne who lived in Dale Crescent? My name was Mary Midgley at school now Mary Hills I left this class at the end of 1956, as my family moved to Telscombe Cliffs and started school in Newhaven C.S.M school for the last 6 months.
I remember a Mr Mann as one of my form teachers and also Miss Hollands used to take us for hockey.

  • To Mary Smith nee Gillespie. In this photo of 1956 I am 1st on the left in 3rd row. In the same row are Pat Thynne and Brenda Mells. My name then was Mary Midgley now Mary Hills. I believe Mr. Mann took us for swimming at the North Road swimming baths.

  • Referring to my comment of 28/8/21 I have been successful in tracing Patricia Thynne after 67 years, but no luck with Gillian Day who is in the middle of myself and Patricia. Pat lives in Southwater and we are hoping to meet up sometime this year.
