Hollingbury Hillfort

A favourite walk

The walk to the hillfort was another of my father’s favourites. We would catch the number fourteen bus at the bottom of Highcroft Villas, which had snaked its way there from Wish Road via Montefiore Road. It was bound for the Gaiety Cinema, now the site of Sainsbury’s at the Vogue Gyratory System, via Dyke Road Drive and Stanford Avenue.

Cross-country walk

At Fiveways it descended to ‘the Dip’ from where we could walk up Hertford Road. From the top it was all cross-country to the hillfort, where I was able to conjure up in my imagination scenes from the Bronze Age.

Cross-city route

Afterwards we would go down the steep incline through Moulsecoomb Wild Park and then along Lewes Road, passing Preston Barracks and the Corporation Bus Garage en route to the Gaiety to get the bus home. If only there was such an interesting cross-city route these days!
