Class of 1972

Good memories of the school

I have such good memories of St Marks down at Arundel Road. For instance, Mr Green was wonderful and I learnt so much in his class. The outside loos were not much fun though. Miss Catlin put together a very succesfull netball team that I was part of. We beat all the local schools. I even remember one game being called off at half time as we were winning something like 45 – 0.

Anyone game for a reunion?

Would love to trace people from this photo for a reunion in September when we will all start to reach our 50th birthdays. Names on this photo -if I remember rightly are:

Back row

Debbie Allen, Sally Ann Perry, Sarah Hewitt, Karen Simmons, Fiona Fisher, Susan Wisdom, Roy Middleton, Nicola Day, Russell Church, Brendon Foat. Next row Audrey Fowler, Julie Stevens, Linda Watson, Hilary Wilson, Andrew Benham, me, Clive Wingrave, Kim Stacey, Ann Southern, Jocelyn Eason, Karen Batchelor,

Next row

Adrian Howard, Sharon Jenkins, Tracey Barker, Karen Beecham, Miss Fittock, Elizabeth Barrett, Howard Allen, Mark Hopkins, Paul Manley, Timothy Bull.

Front row

Andrew Nokes, Michael Hewitt, John Parsons, Nigel Collis, Mark Selby, Wayne Harman, Steven Beadle, Steven Strutt.

How’s that for memory test. I did have names on the back of the photo though.

  • Hi Jane, I didn’t even know this photograph existed. Have many people been in contact? Seems a life time ago. You had to mention that we are all approaching our 50th birthdays, deep joy. I look forward to hearing from you.

  • Hi Roy, I have all our class photos. Have been in touch with Mike Hewitt for a few years now and it is he and I that want to arrange a reunion. Have traced a few people but am having trouble finding a lot of them. Are you in touch with anyone? I have spoken to Tracey who knows where Clive and Susan are. Have caught up with Elizabeth and Hilary and Michael has spoken to Adrian (spud). My email address is janegray_lewes@hotmail.com. Please do email me there and let me know if you can help tracing anyone or if you would be interested in a reunion later this year.

  • Hello Jane, very long time no see, hope all’s well with you etc.
Hi Roy, saw Andy Stowell last week over from Oz. Spoke to Karen Batchelor the other week; saw Ann Southern recently and Debbie Allen whilst I was out flying my birds. This is wierd, I only typed my name in the Virgin Media search box to see how many items were listed and this caught my eye. I’m up for a meet 😉 I can be contacted on sakerclive@ntlworld.com

  • Hoping to have the reunion on 12th November. More info to follow.

  • We have now organised an informal reunion in the Sidewinders pub in Upper St James’s Street, Brighton on Friday 19th November from 7pm.

  • What a fantastic site this is. I have only just discovered it. At home I have my class photos of 1968 juniors year 1 teacher Mr Brooks: 1969 year 2 , Miss Mawhinney: 1970 year 3, Mr Green, and 1971 year 4, teacher Miss Fittock. If anyone is interested I will post them here.

Editor’s note: Thanks David. To upload your photos you will need to register for the site. You can do that via the navigation bar on the left. If you look here you will find a video which talks you through the upload process. If you get stuck contact me at jennifer@mybrightonandhove.org.uk

  • Hello Jane – I spoke to my brother Paul this morning and told me to check this page. Sorry I missed the reunion but am always available (work permmiting) to be involved with the next one. I often pass the site and look on it with mixed feelings. Fascinating to see everyone again.

By Mark Hopkins (now Hoye) (13/09/2011)
  • Hi Mark. Sorry we couldn’t find you to invite you. It was great meeting up and catching up. Some people hadn’t changed at all – well a bit maybe. Lots of memories came flooding back. Haven’t got another reunion planned but if we do, I’ll let you know through this page.

  • Miss Fittock was lovely, one of the best teachers I ever had.

    By Andy Mountford (23/08/2012)
  • Amazing what one finds on the internet these days, this photo certainly brought back some memories; a classroom in the vicarage cellar, British bulldog in the playground, football on the park, Miss Mawhinney’s music lessons – happy days.

  • Good grief! Didn’t we all look adorable? I live in the U.S. now. But would love to get in touch with my St. Mark’s classmates. By the way, Jane – there’s a Facebook group for Westlain. Most of the members are from the ’60s. We need a ’71 presence. The last year it was Westlain, before it became Falmer.

  • How lovely. I’ve just found this page on my old but lovely St Mark’s School. I am 50 this year – went there in1968. Would love to hear from anyone. June Hocking, Jeff Falbrown, Russ Bliss and Richard Worrell were in my year.

  • To all who were in the same class as Jane nee Horribin, Sarah and Michael Hewitt, Clive Wingrave, etc:  We’re thinking about putting together a Facebook Group for our classmates.  Of course not everyone may wish to participate, but if you do, please let us know by either leaving a message or sending an email.  Cheers everyone.

  • Hi, I have just found this site – great photo – and I have seen my sister Audrey Fowler in it. I would love to see other photos if you have them.

    By Julia Fowler (24/08/2015)
  • Hi Tim Bull, your brother Rob was my mate at school. I spent a lot of time at your house. My sister Linda Watson is in the photo. I went to St Mark’s.

    By Pete Watson (08/10/2016)
  • Hi Pete, I remember you. Lived in the first house in Cliff Approach and then the flats at the bottom of Cliff Road, behind the fire station.

    By Tim Bull (16/10/2018)
  • Fantastic school, although I only went there for 3 years. 1968- 1971. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

    By Paul Cooper (12/07/2019)
  • Hi I have some good memories of being at St Marks. I remember Richard Worrell, Michele Winter, Lindsey Ecot, Paul Cole, Leonora Taylor, June Hocking, Jackie Lott, Dean Hogg, Russell Bliss, and Jonny Briffa. Actually I remember lots of us but if I’m honest it would be faces more than names unfortunately. I’d love to meet up; any reunions planned?

  • I went to St Marks infant & junior schools. I took the 11+ and failed it and went off Whitehawk senior with a handful of others.

Just sent 3 more class pictures for us lot, I think I have the correct year for them 69, 70 & 71 but never had the 72 one above.

St Marks netball team was indeed unbeatable owing to a formidable squad and an advantage in the height of some players. Some of us boys watched a lot of the games and I remember a lot of high scoring wins.

We also had a good football team & more winning boxers than the other schools (some of the boxing skills may have been honed in the playground ‘bundles’of course!).

Mr Green also encouraged hockey in the walled front lawn, cricket and ‘stool ball’. He was a good teacher out on the field but he had a revolving blackboard, lessons on one side and the list of people who had to do ‘lines’ on the other. I recall it was usually 500 words or something.

I wish there were more photos of the old building but have only ever found the 3 on this site. It was a massive building to a 5 year old child on the their 1st day.

Only found this site recently and have read about coming up to our 50’s and now here we are getting very close to our 60’s.

    Time flys!!

  • 60 now guys! Lovely to see The Picture again.

    By Mark Hoye (Hopkins) (27/01/2021)
  • Sadly my father Nigel Collis passed away unexpectedly last year, he would have loved to have seen this. I remember him speaking of Jonny Parsons, I gathered they were very good boisterous friends. I’m so pleased I found this online, I’ll be sure to pass on to my uncle.

    By Michelle Eke (08/12/2023)
  • Sad to hear your news about Nigel. Your dad and I were great friends at St Marks and right through secondary school together. Some of the stories I could tell ! I remember your uncle (Stewart) as well.

    By Brendan Foat (22/12/2023)
  • Thank you for replying Brendan, I would really love to hear some of those stories of my father’s childhood. I am really struggling with grief since his passing and feel some shared stories may help. Is there any way we could make this possible please?
