Ancestors burial place

St Nicholas’ Church must have been an impressive landmark in days gone by when the influence of the church was so much greater. Sitting above the town and sea, overlooking its flock, including the fishermen. My ancestors were baptised, married and buried here. Whether they worshipped there regularly I am less sure – there is a strong non-conformist element in that side of the family.

A tranquil haven

For me, today it remains a landmark. I used to regularly walk through the churchyard and like the idea that work has been conducted in recent years to maintain the history and explore more about the characters buried there. The churchyard is a tranquil place although so close to the rush of central Brighton. Even if not particularly religious or interested in attending services, the church and the churchyard create a haven alongside the focus on business and commerce.
