Cricket team c1960/61

A student in the early 1960s

I was at Preston College from 1959-1963. The college cricket team photo here was probably taken c1960-61 at Lindfield. I am the chap directly below Mr Bostock. I wonder if anyone can help by identifying themselves – or others.

An old boys’ reunion?

I would dearly love to see something on the lines of a reunion planned in the not too distant future. The clock is ticking and we don’t want to lose all those stories and memories that must be around from the late forties to sixties.

Can you add any names to the photograph? Please leave a comment below if you can help. If you are interested in contacting me please mail me at  (baynes47@comcast.net)

  • What a great idea to set up this website – it certainly evokes fond past memories for many of us ‘old Brightonians’, so thank you very much and keep up the good work. Maurice.

  • Is that ‘Daddy Bastock’ in the centre of the back row?

    By Maurice Brice (16/10/2010)
  • Hello Maurice. Yes, you are right, that is ‘Daddy’ Bastock.

  • Hello Leslie Baynes. your cricket team photo could not have been taken at Lindfield as Mr Bastock senior had died long before then when the school was at Preston Road. Best wishes, Dennis Stevens

  • Is the chap second from left seated not Pete Newman?

    By Mick Belva (20/06/2012)
  • I was at the college between 1959 -61 as a day pupil. I think that the chap in the back row far right is Leslie Little who I used to travel in with from Brighton. In the middle row seated 3rd in is a fellow whose first name I can’t recall but think his surname is Waller and who lived in Hampstead. I may be wrong.

  • Hi I’m the one on the right of Mr Bastok senior, if I remember correctly it was in Lindfield, that this photo was taken. The 3rd guy from the left sitting down is John Beal in the middle in front of Mr Bastok Senior is Robert Robinson, next is Harold Kaiser, w/the leg pads on the far right is Miller or WK I can’t remember his name (old age).

  • Hi Leslie, I am in the cricket picture of 60/61 and I have it in my possession with the names of ALL the guys in it. Pleased to chat with you. Known then as Harold Kaiser.

  • I have been away for awhile as I had given up that anybody from my period would respond. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many responses there were to the cricket picture! Dennis, I still believe the picture was taken in Lindfield as I did not make the cricket team until the school moved to Haywards Heath. The far right man is Leslie Little he had a brother called, I believe, Graham who I hung out with. In fact Graham and I held a record for years at the school. Pablo, do you remember when all the rockers came out to the school? Mick, that is Pete Newman, you are correct. Do you ever see Martin Drain or John Burleigh? Did you make it into the army? Well, thanks for so many of you responding. Perhaps, as the clock is ticking, a reunion would be interesting for all. Harold, have you thought about posting any of the pictures. I would love to know the names of all the players. Cheers

  • Apologies to you Leslie Baines, I now realise that it was Mrs Bastock senior that died before the move to Paxhll Park, not Mr Bastock senior. And yes this photo was taken in Lindfield. Regards

  • I have now “updated” my DropBox system and I can give access to anyone that is interested in seeing the School photos for the years 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962 & 1964. All these photos are with  thanks to David Waller who has taken the trouble of keeping them in excellent condition for more than 50 years. I have contributed only in making life size digital copies of them so you can see how you looked like then. At this time only the people that have given some sign of life to me or to Gabs have the possibility of logging into my DropBox, but if you are interested, send me an e-mail to muller.(my name) at. gmail.com and I’ll be more than happy to put your address on the list of the people that can access the site.

  • Hello again.  Apologies to you Leslie Baynes for not replying.  I had forgotten about this site.  Yes I joined REME and had a 26 year career before retiring as a WO class 1.  I eventually became a lecturer in a college before taking early retirement in 2004 anfd moving to Dorset where I still live with my family. I never met Martin again but did see John Burley twice in Belgium between 1975 and 1977 and once again in Brighton.  I think he then moved to Wales and I have since lost contact.  I’ll keep a better watch on the site for more comments. Regards.

  • Mick, yes that was Pete Newman. You remember Pete, that was a funny period. You will laugh if your memory is still good.

  • I believe the guy back row second in from the left is my Dad, Stewart Woolway.
