Class photo c1959

This photograph is of my classmates at St Mark’s School circa 1959 with our teacher Shaw Phillips.

I am the little chap in the front row 6 from the right, between the girl and the boy.

I now live in Boston in the USA. Can you identify yourself or anyone else? If you can I would really love to hear from you. Please leave a comment below.

  • Hi Derek I remember your name and the face. Just a few names I remember, back row left to right 1st boy Tony Haywood. 2nd row 2nd in with goggles, Lawrence Gumbrill. 4th in, Wingrave. 10th in I think it’s Dawn Street or Sweet. Front row 8th in, Silsby Bobs sister. I hope this was helpful. I was in the 1961-2 boxing team when we won the shield. If you have any more photos of the old school days I would love to see them. http://www.thevoxbeatles.co.uk I am the drummer, you might recognise me.

  • Hi John, How good of you to make a comment. And as for http://www.thevoxbeatles.co.uk I think you all look pretty cool and the gear looks even cooler. As for the photo: The big fella standing up at the end is David Budd for sure and the chap with the check shirt in the front row is Ian Jackson and I think the scowling chap in a dark sweater, at the back, is David Lumbsden. Her name was Dawn Street not Sweet, I remember now. I think Joanne Tucknott, Grame Grey and Jeff Jackson are in there somewhere but I can’t identify them yet. Anyway, good job….

  • Hi Derek and John. I am in the front row at the far left with the blonde hair in plaits. I remember David Budd, Lesley Wright (back row 5th from left), Rosemary ? (front row 4th from right). I don’t know who Jeff jackson is in photo but do know that I was madly in love with him when at school ha ha. Please say you have some more school photos as I have no photos of myself as a child and was so pleased to find this one. Hope you are both doing well. I am married with a son and daughter and two beautiful grandsons, and now live in not so sunny Southend on Sea, Essex.

  • I remember Mrs Phillips who taught me ca.1950. Her son was in my class. I remember going to his birthday party at a house in Woodingdean, I believe.

  • I joined this class in the first year of junior school, Miss Hewitt was the teacher, she had a Lambretta ( how cool was she).I remember Derek, and a lot of other names, Dave Lumsden, David Budd, Glen Surtees, Tony Haywood, Roger Wingrave, Chris Ross-King, Lol Gumbrill, Graham Rea, Pauline Jones, Joanne Tucknott, Leslie Tyson, Mark Pybuss, Alan Hallett, Bob Warren, Ian Hayler…… as the years followed teachers were Miss Mawinney, Mr Green ( get set hoo!) and Mrs Knight, headmaster was Mr Pinchen. In the final year we had a pretty good football team, finished second to Whitehawk by two points ( time to let it go I think….two points!!!).

  • Tremendous oversight on my part, Pete Tamkin is still a proper mate after all this time. He moved to Bexhill when he was 7 or 8, we met up when we were 16 and have been mates ever since ( slight gap while our respective families were establishing) but 50 yrs, it’s a long time.

  • I wonder if any of you can help me? I only have one pic of my dad who was also called David Budd. I just wondered if any of you knew roughly what year this David Budd would have been born?

    By Jodie Maltby (01/04/2012)
  • Hi Jodie. I was at school the same time as David Budd in the photo. I was born in 1953 and I guess he is about the same age.

    By John Mountford (06/04/2012)
  • Thanks John, it’s definitely him. I know he doesn’t want to be found as he had a family when I was conceived. I’ve just always been curious as to where he’s from because I’ve inherited his colouring, so if anyone knows anything it would be much appreciated.

    By Jodie (29/05/2012)
  • Hi Alan, yes I remember you well. Do you remember Mr Green and the scary Miss MacWhinney?

    By Pauline Jones (30/06/2012)
  • Hi Guys, wow, I was searching for pictures of Manor Road, Brighton and this page came up. After studying the picture for a while, I thought, that’s me…shocked I started to read the comments. I am very happy, I have no pictures of me as a child around this time. Thank you Derek my old best mate, I’ve looked for you on FB but without any luck and also Tim Freeman. Good to see you all, wow…

  • Hi Guy What a shock to see this photo, I’m middle row third from the right, next to me is Elaine Nelson, on the end is Pat Williams in front of her is Janice Thwaites next two are Susan ?, Julia ? then Rosemary Taylor and Susan Smart. Pauline I remember you we used to play together. I live in Haywards Heath with husband and 15 year old son.

  • The more I look at this photo the more names I remember. In front of Mrs Phillips is Vanessa Hayward, back row 4th from the left is Anne Foster. Four along from her next to Joanne Tucknott is Linda Lewisky and front row 2nd in is Susan Rawlings, it was Dawn Streeter not Street. I think David Budd lived in Manor Hill.

  • I wonder if anyone can help me with information, photos or just a few names to jog my memory. I was born in 1952, lived at 7 Rugby Place, can remember spending a short time at St Mark’s School before moving to Woodingdean (146 Bexhill Road). There I finished primary school and went on to Longhill Secondary in 1963. A little later we then moved to Whitehawk (15 Whitehawk Avene) which I left finally in 1973 to come to Germany.

    By Colin Shepherd (23/07/2012)
  • Hi Colin Shepherd. I noticed that you said that you lived at 15 Whitehawk Avenue. I lived there with my family in the early 60s, what can you tell me about your time there? And can you tell me if you, or anyone you might know, know anything about Raymond McCarthy who went to St Mark’s and lived in Rifle Butt Road. Thanks.

    By Lettie Austen (28/07/2012)
  • Hello Lettie. I’m afraid I can’t remember Raymond McCarthy. I’m not really sure about the exact year when we moved to Whitehawk Ave, it must have been around 1964 / 65. We lived between the Ryders (Peg and Wally) and the Wilsons (I think her name was Joyce but I’m not sure and I’ve got no memories of her husband). The Ryders had a daughter named Patricia and the Wilsons a son named Roy and two daughters whose names I’ve forgotten which isn`t a wonder after nigh on 40 years of being abroad. Roy and I were mates, we used to play on the playing fields which I believe were on Whitehawk Rd, sliding down the grass slopes of Manor Hill on bits of cardboard, building so-called “four wheel nags“ or carts then sitting or laying down on them rolling down Whitehawk Ave going as far as you can, sometimes even getting as far as the shops on the Broardway. The only thing that wasn’t so good was dragging them back home again. Unfortunately through going to Longhill Secondary I didn’t have much contact with the lads from Whitehawk apart from Roy. The only other person who comes to mind at the moment is James or Jimmy Taylor. I believe he lived somewhere over “the Manor “. We three started a vehicle mechanic apprenticeship at the G.P.O. After finishing my apprenticeship I went to work for the British Leyland franchise dealers in Briighton and Hove as a spare parts storeman. Other recollections I have as a school lad are fishing from the Banjo Groyne and the Palace Pier, swimming at the Black Rock Pool and Saltdean Lido, playing over the East Brighton Park, drinking tea sitting on deckchairs at the little pavilion, watching the cricket matches and the main library in Brighton- I believe it was in the vicinity of the Royal Pavilion. Getting older I remember playing darts at the Whitehawk Inn, a discotheque called the Birdcage, the Wimpy bar which was near and the Top Rank dancehall where you only got in wearing a collar and tie, down at the end of Ship St I think. Oh yes, one of my girlfreinds lived in a block of flats at the top of Whitehawk Ave where the bus turned around to come back down and stop at the bus stop opposite our house. Incidentally have you looked at the web page “Growing up in Whitehawk in the 1950s“ by Colin Chitty? It`s interesting and the comments made may help to jog one’s memory. There are mentions of Rifle Butt Rd and lots of names- maybe that could help you with your enquires.

    By Colin Shepherd (31/07/2012)
  • Hi Colin, I think one of Roy’s sisters was Linda. I was born in 1954 so we were probably at St Marks at the same time.

By Wendy Lawrence nee Dawson (31/07/2012)
  • This comment is for Lettie Austin just to say that I knocked around with Ray McCarthy for a while when I was a kid. I lived about a quarter of a mile from his house. Ray lived in Rifle Butt Road as you say, with his gran I believe, just by the bakery. We went to different schools- I went to school in Woodingdean at Fitzherbert. We got on OK and just did what other kids did in that time in the 50s, there was plenty to get up to in our area, it was just fun most of the time.

    By Mick Peirson (01/08/2012)
  • Hello Wendy. I think you’re right, the name Linda does ring a bell, as far as I can remember she was the younger of the two daughters and that the older daughter was married to a pig farmer. Roy and I used to spend part of the summer term holidays camping on their farm. Unfortunately I don´t recollect anything other than being at St Mark`s for a short time and living in Rugby Place before moving to Woodingdean. When I left England I didn’t take any school records with me so I can’t say in which year I was at St Mark’s. Maybe if you know and could mention a few names of the people from around the time you were at St Mark`s, that could help to jog my memory. Thanking you in advance.

  • Hello Derek, Wendy, Ian and everyone. I’m in the middle row in front of the boy with the striped T shirt. Christopher Ross-King is 5th from the left in the middle row. His mum and mine were best friends. I also particularly remember Janice Thwaites, Ian Jackson, David Budd, Wendy Dawson and Rosemary Taylor. Hi Pauline – yes I remember scary Miss Mawhinney. She punched me in the back once and Chris Ross-King told my mum who went straight to the school and caused a huge fuss. We moved when I was nearly eight and I transferred to St John’s, Carlton Hill and then on to Queen’s Park Secondary.

  • Hello Pauline, I remember you too, fond memories of Mr Green, not so fond of Miss Mawinney, spent most of the year keeping my head down. There is now a photo of us in that actual class, the longest year of my life .

    By Alan Leeves (13/12/2012)
  • Hi John Mountford, it’s Kim Orzynski, I used to live in Marine Square opposite the lift down to “the Banjo groin”. I too was in the boxing team when we won the 61/62 boxing shield. The finals were held at Fawchett if I’ve got it correctly. In the “Evening Argus” there was a picture of us all, titled “The Pint Sized Punchers” -  anyone remember it?   I left later that year I think.

    By Kim Orzynski (26/02/2014)
  • Hello Wendy Dawson, Just seen the photo and I remember quite a few names, David Budd, Christopher Ross-King, Dave Lumsden, Allen Hallett and of course yourself, and your neighbour Linda Hall I think her name was, the three of us would meet at your house and play games in the garden we also went to East Brighton Park for hours, memorable times, I moved from Hervey Road when I was 13, you might remember my sister Janet and brother David, sadly David died when he was 15, I’m married with 2 children and 7 grandchildren.
