  • Recognise some of the girls in the photos – Pat Budd, Joan Noble and a girl her surname was Greenfield. Also Janet Hill. I am sure I must be in photos as well but I haven’t any school photos of me at school. If anyone recognises me can they let me know please

  • I can remember that we had a teacher, Mr Barnwell, he took us for maths and if you didn’t pay attention he would throw the blackboard duster at you. Mr Taylor took us for PE and if the boys were caught fighting he would make them box each other after school. Mr Alan took the boys up to Riley hall garden for gardening which was just up past St John’s church. I also remember our head teacher’s name at time was Mr Wilson I think. I can’t remember the lady teachers’ names. In my year there was Joy Smith, Eileen Bryant, Evelyn Coats, Joan Noble, Rita Lamper. The boys’ names – Brian Monk, Colin Beal, George Newman,  Billy Button, Terry Banfield and Colin Howick

  • Mr Barnwell, I guess I’m not allowed to comment on this site regarding this particular “Teacher”! But I think I can safely say that most male teachers from the fifties in Brighton were rejected applicants from the Spanish inquisition. I think they operated a system of education by terror. By the way the headmaster at St John’s juniors was Mr Witten (Wilson was a close guess).

  • Does C West know if I am in any of these photos? I would love to know.

  • I’m afraid I don’t know the names to anyone in these photos except those couple of names mentioned, the only name that I can put to a face is Janet Hill and the boy seated on left in the class 2 1950 photo whose name was Tony and I used to go to his house in Queen’s Park road after school to play. I have to say that my school days were not happy ones.

  • Does anyone know if there are any school records from 1950 -1954 saying who was in what class in the junior school? I would be interested in seeing them if there are.

  • Hi Kath, you’re not in the photos on display here but you’re in the photos I’ve just uploaded. I’m sure you’ll recognise yourself – if not I’ll point you out!

  • I remember Mr Barnwell, we used to call him Bumble (‘coz of his name and he had bandy legs). He used the cane a lot on the boys. Yes, Mr Witten was the headmaster, I think a Mr Knowls was the music teacher and I believe it’s him in one of the photos I’ve put up. I recognise a lot of the faces in the photos above but can’t remember names – but a few I recall here are: Terry Harriot and Yvonne Harriot, Wendy Heffron and Pat Heffron, Anne Goble, Pat Budd, Teddy Denya and Evelyn Coats. Need a spell check on those names – but I tried. Joy (nee Smith)

  •  I went to a 50th wedding anniversary last week and met some old pupils from St John’s School, Carlton Hill who I haven’t seen for about 50 years. We spoke about the old teachers, Mr Barnwell, Maths, Mr Allan, Mr Taylor, sports teacher. The school was where the Amex offices are. They were good days. Does anyone know if there is a school reunion?  It is so changed around that area. You can get in touch with me by my email. My address is, kathleencatt69@yahoo.co.uk

  • Hello, I have been reading the comments and wonder If C. West the person that has put the photos of St Johns’ infants school has any of the building at the back of the the school called the arts school / canteen. I would appreciate any help in locating any photos of that building as I used to play on the roof when I was a kid.
