This shows the engineer’s plans to install drains and cover over the original cess pool in the back yard of number 31 Claremont Place.
Number 31 was unique as it had a two storey wash house built at the end of the back yard. This was demolished about 1946 after I fell down the stairs as a toddler.
The house was built around 1837 and is fairly representative of most of the slum dwellings in the east slopes area.
