Early photo of the estate

Another view of the original estate of Mile Oak. Ms. Painter’s roof top can be seen, Joan Stanford’s black house is in the foreground. I can see my old home also. This was possibly taken just before WWII and or early 1950?

Can any of you Mile Oakers help us out with a date or give us more details?

  • I love the old Mile Oak, I really think this is before WWII, as trees in my front garden cannot be seen.

  • It’s a very similar shot to that shown under “Views of Mile Oak in 1940” on this site. In both you can see the barn at the rear. I seem to remember housing in the mid to late 1960’s almost reaching the barn, just one field to cross before we could play in the barn!

  • Hi Peter Groves. Are you by any means related to Steven and David Groves who I used to play with about the time you mentioned (mid 1960s)? They lived in the lower end of Stanley Ave just up on the left from Chalky Rd in one of the bungalows there – I think it was No 3. I would love to talk to them again, if they remember me. We used to play a lot together. I live up at the Alms cottages near the chalkpit. No 279.  itsmepaul57@gmail.com

  • Hello Bonny and all, this is a great photo, the plot of land between Mrs Stanford and the White House was bought by my grandparents James and Mary Beck. They built what is now 363 and 365 Mile Oak Road. The remnant of the original plot still remains at the back, which was an allotment tended by George and Betty Rowland. The small building further down the plot is about where Mrs Greenslade’s bungalow ended up being built in Mile Oak Gardens, who was the grandmother of my old pal Mark Allen. If anyone could send me this photo I would much appreciate it as I would like to make a print of it.

  • Bonny, this photograph is shown on the mileoakrevisited.co.uk website and is dated 1937-38, I have also updated the web site recently.

  • This picture could almost have been taken from our house (216)! We have the date of build on our deeds as about 1922. From your readers/ posters so far, there is no mention of our row of houses?

  • No’s 73 & 75 Stanley Avenue were built in the 1930’s.
There is a photo taken by pilots in WW11 with these two bungalows surrounded by sheep!
