St Mark's School, Arundel Road

Class photograph

By David Gillam

In this group are Mr Pincham (not sure of spelling) headmaster and Mrs Knight, form teacher. The year was 1962; we all left that summer to go to senior school

Names I remember are Ann Cottingham, David Fisher, James Leishman, Alec Rollings, Jan Dabrowski, Jaqueline Beard, Sue Osborne and Christopher Radford. I am in the front row, fourth from the left.

If you recognise yourself or anyone else, please leave a comment below.

Christopher Radford was my foster brother but I haven't a scoobie do which boy he is in the photo (haven't seen him for 50+ years as I went to St Lukes and then onto boarding school in London) - can't even recognise myself - there again I may not be in the photo. I seem to remember the class was split into the A and B stream and Mrs Knight would teach each stream separately. I remember Christopher went onto Brighton and Hove Grammer School. Anyone remember me or have a photo of me?

Hi Joe. I remember you. Like you say it's 50+ years since we were there. Did you live up near Belle View Gardens?

Hi David - yes near enough - I lived on Abbey Road, the other side of Eastern Road.  I used to walk down to Paston Place by the old cinema to get a bus to school.  I have to apologise but I do not remember your name but I do remember some of the ones you mentioned.  Also remember a girl called Yvonne, Linda (surname Rose although I think she came to school one day and Mrs Knight told us she had changed her surname to something else).
I showed the photo to my daughter and son-in-law and two of my grandsons and they all think I am the lad top row 2nd in from the left.  I certainly had blonde hair (now grey) - was small and a bit of a whipper snapper and was in the 'B' Stream.  Christopher Radford was in the 'A' Stream, passed the 11+ and went on to grammer school.  Can't remember much else except we played rounders in the playground and football across in East Brighton Park.  We played conkers, marbles and British bulldog.  I received corporal punishment from Mr Pinchen on my birthday - we used to climb some stairs to the dining room and on each landing was a monitor - the girl this time round pulled me out of the line and we were on the landing of the headmaster's room - he came out said "what a naughty boy" took me into his room and gave me 3 strokes - the ironic thing about this story is the girl was my girlfriend at the time - whatever 'boyfriend, girlfriend' meant at that age!  All for now.

Hello Joe, yes, I think that is you in the back row. I am the curly hair on the left. I haven’t been on this site in nearly ten years. An idle moment this afternoon and the world spins. I never knew the whole story or the truth. Guilt at any part I may have played in the outcome has always accompanied my frequent visits to past memories. Twelve year old boys are often selfish and made 'of slugs and snails and puppy dog tails'. I am married with three grown-up children and five grandchildren. This is my email address. Christo.radfor@btconnect.com.

Hello David - any chance of an email or hard copy of the school photo?  Happy to pay or make a donation to a charity of your choice. As can be seen from above Chris and I (after 50+ years) are back in contact - thanks David, for this happy event. [Lovely to learn that you and your foster brother are in contact, Joe - we love a happy story at MyBrightonandHove! The Editing Team]
