Double Diamond Jubilee celebrations at Craven Vale
Estate’s 60th Anniversary
Residents on the Craven Vale Estate celebrated a double diamond event this Jubilee weekend as they share their estate’s 60th Anniversary with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Saturday 2 June. The new Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Bill Randall, accompanied by the Mayoress Mrs Heather Randall, declared the day open as the local community Samba band played in a procession of kings and queens through the ages. Members of the organising committee were dressed as their favourite monarchs which include Charles II, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth I and, of course Queen Elizabeth II.
Varied programme of entertainment
The street party was held in Hadlow Close, Craven Vale, where residents were treated to entertainment reflecting both a nationally and locally historic day. Children enjoyed a number of fun activities including commemorative plate painting, crown making and decorating. A fascinating exhibition of photographs dating back to 1952, when the estate was first built, had been put together by some of the estate’s original residents, who also shared their memories of the ‘good old days’ through poetry and prose.
Local community pride
Councillor Bill Randall, said: “I’ve worked with Craven Vale residents during the past seven years and know the estate well. This is one of my first community engagements as Mayor of the City, and it’s good to see at first hand all the hard work and imagination that has gone into creating this double celebration. It is testament to the pride residents and tenants of Craven Vale take in their local community.”

How come I didn’t get to know about this celebration or the book by Roy Pennington? I was possibly the first baby born on the new Craven Vale Estate – born at home in Parham Close. Many of my father’s family were builders working on the estate. Pity I missed the celebrations – it was and is a great place.
“Pride of our Valley” is not “my” book – I just reviewed it in the community pages of the Argus. Pity you could not get to hear of the project before the book was published but there is a website now on which further memories can be lodged! http://www.cravenvale.org.uk/
