Crossroad with Clarendon Road

I have just found this image in our family collection.

The Muggeridge’s General Store is on the left and Lidbetters, a coal & coke merchant, opposite.

  • Hi Gordon. The property stood on the north-east corner of Goldstone Street, at the crossroad with Clarendon Road. It was numbered 16 in those days. The picture was far more likely to have been taken in the early 20th century, as Muggeridge was not listed in directories as occupying those premises before 1900; it was occupied by a Miss Morgan. By 1909 the property had been renumbered to 47, Clarendon Road and Muggeridge is listed there until around 1914. On the opposite (south-east) corner was John Lidbitter’s, listed as a Greengrocer at 45, Clarendon Road. Regards, Andy

  • With the railway bridge showing in the distance, this appears to be the view of a section of Goldstone Street (looking north) that sadly no longer exists; the crossroads with Clarendon Road in the foreground now reduced to a T-junction.

  • I don’t have a comment as such but I have been able to repair the damage to this image. If anyone (Mr,. Muggeridge?) would like copy, please email me at info@photosbyjester.com. I’ll gladly send back the repaired version. (1580x984px.) Sadly, I don’t seem to be able to upload it here for all to see.

  • Muggeridge’s General Store would have stood on the north-west corner of Goldstone Street, Andy. Its site is occupied today by residents’ car parking at the rear of the “modern” Ellen Street terraced houses. A rectangular archway over a ground level pedestrian walkway gives access “through” the terrace to Ellen Street, which runs parallel to Clarendon Road to the north. The archway still allows a clear sighting of the railway bridge over Fonthill Road in the background from the same viewpoint. I have a present day photo of the scene which I hope to be able to upload to this website shortly.

  • Thanks to the ‘magic’ of Jester and co-operation of Jennifer, Goldstone Street has had a ‘Spring Clean’

  • Interesting picture this. My father, Stan Coleman, had a shop at 16 Goldstone Street from approx. 1936 -1966, originally a sweet shop then as a radio and later on as a TV repair shop. I’m not sure that the pic is at the Goldstone Street / Clarendon Road junction. I think  this is the junction of Goldstone Street /  Shirley Street as the railway bridge seems too far away. If it is the Clarendon Road junction then my father’s shop would be next door (southwards) from the second shop blind on the left going northwards. Any comments?

  • I believe Lidbitters shown on the opposite corner eventually changed to a greengrocers where I lived until it was demolished in approx 1967.
