Sedgewick, Rudgewick and Chelwood Tenants Association

These are photographs s of the Silver Jubilee Street Party held in Sedgewick Road, now called Bramble Way Hollingbury, in 1977. My mother had made a huge Union Flag cake and every one contributed some food to add to that provided by the tenant’s association.  The SRC tennants association had worked on fund raising for the event, and made all the bunting. To their delight, every child was provided with a red, white and blue rosette.

The wind howled as it always does up on that hill and the rain only just kept off. Everyone joined in and ‘break off’ parties went on to the small hours. It was hard work but we enjoyed it and the whole community came together.

  • I lived at 3 Rudgwick Road from 1960 till 67. Good memories, made lots of friends – John Gayford, Roy Tobutt, Brian Green, Terry Hallarhan. Happy days!

  • I lived at 9 Rudgewick Road from 1959. Mum and Dad were known as Pat and Sid and indeed these were happy days. I remember people from those days and they include Steven and all the Dove family. Does the name Laura Simmonds ring any bells? By the time these pictures were taken I was married and moved on. Mum and Dad still lived there but I don’t recall this event.

  • I lived at 17 Rudgwick Road from around 1956 to 1959 when we moved up the road to Hurst Hill. As I was only 4 I don’t recall too many people apart from the Mephams who lived opposite our block, and a boy called Trevor who broke my mum’s necklace that I was wearing!

  • Yes Steve, I remember you well and the other names you mention, along with Graham Wiltshire, David Mepham, Trevor Hale and Graham Mitchell.  I also have fond memories of playing cricket with stumps chalked on the wall on what was then the grassed area (now car parking) at the end of Rudgwick Road.  Doesn’t seem possible that it was 50 years ago.

  • I lived at 46 Rudgwick Road, 1975-1980, and I remember the Jubilee party, I’d have been sat somewhere just behind the woman with the blue coat! I was six at the time. I think my dad (Peter Gretton) painted the ‘road closed’ signs that went up at the end of Sedgewick Road. Does anyone know when and why the road names changed?

  • I remember the party and I am indeed in the photo. Happy days and fond memories. In a time when it was for kids of our era, safe to explore Stanmer Park, Giants Foot and Hollngbury Golf Course. As long as you were home for tea.

  • I was 7 years old when this took place and that is our block of flats behind them, we lived at number 49 Sedgewick Road and I am sure our lovely neighbour, Mrs Pointer, would have made some cakes for this occasion as she did all the time. I look hard at this picture and wonder was I sitting there with my back to the camera? I don’t have any memories that far back, but seeing these pictures is truly a wonderful thing to see. Stay in good health everyone and be lucky in life.

  • I believe that my grandad is in this picture. He was Fred Burgess, and possibly my nan Sylvia Burgess is also in the picture. They lived at number 20 Chelwood Close, they lived there for years. My grandad lived there right up until 2009 when he sadly passed away. I’m sure this picture was taken just around the back of their flat, as I spent lots of time there, although I lived in Plymouth.

  • Hi Michelle

  • I was 10 in 1977. My mum, Jeanette Owen (nee Taylor), who was on her own, had moved down into the town with us by then. I visited the street recently and I am dismayed that Sedgewick Road has been renamed Bramble Way. Does anybody know the reason for this?

    By Martin Taylor (09/03/2018)
  • Hi, I lived at 11 Sedgewick Road, from 1970 to 1974, with my son and daughter. I had a good friend who lived across the road to me, named Bobby, she was on her own with her little girl. Does anyone remember her, or me. Also, why was the street name changed to Bramble Way?

    By Jeanette Taylor (30/03/2018)
  • An attempt at gentrification, Jeanette! “The Flats” had a bit of a reputation, although they were perfectly respectable when I lived there. I don’t know why Chelwood Close escaped the re-naming, though.

  • Sadly Colin Court who commented further up passed away a short while ago.
RIP Colin, he started in Sedgewick Road moving down to Rudgewick Road to be with his Carol and they stayed together or close till his passing.
