  • Wow , what memories.  I remember Geoffrey Fischer 3rd right front row – in all my time at Downs never heard him speak one word. Jane Vinnecomb – prettiest girl in class but I was too shy to approach her in those days, if only I could turn back the clock. What wonderful memories and simple times.

  • Thanks Pete, you have a better memory than me!! How are you doing? Where are you living now? I have seen you on facebook. Hope all are well.

  • I remember a lot of those faces even though I was in the year above. Kim Turner is my sister and Guy Salvage my cousin. Peter you are right, Jane was a pretty girl , but I recall she had an older sister who was even prettier. Actually, speaking of older sisters I recall your sister being rather attractive too. Didn’t your parents have a bunch of Pyrrenean mountain dogs?

  • Hi Graham and Mark, I remember you both well. I have been married 28 years to a Maltese girl My son Daniel shows me all your stuff on Facebook. I am so happy you got your wish to be a bus driver. Mark , I remember you from scouts and school. Your sister was always the tallest in the class along with Guy. I remember Guy and his sister very well, at one time he lived round the corner from me in Shaftesbury Avenue. I heard he sadly died at a very young age.  We were very close friends at school and scouts. He was rather posh. I always remember in a soccer match he went up to the ref who was our Arkela and said ” look Arkela , there’s a halo around the sun”.  Hilarious! What brilliant memories

  • Yes – Guy died at 16. Tragic. It was Kim and I who lived in Shaftesbury – Jane and Guy lived in Vere Road, further up the hill. His garden backed onto St Saviour’s, so when we went to Cubs and Scouts, we could just climb over the fence to get in, alongside the crypt.

  • Yeah, I remember Guy’s house well , it was sort of elevated by a raised pavement. I remember his Mum, I think she was one of the first people in those days I knew to separate. How different from today. I remember your dad- he was Baloo at scouts, a nice chap and I remember being envious of your great train set and playing round your house. Amazing to think that was all nearly 50 years ago. I went back to the old school last summer and had a walk around the area for old times sake and it has not really changed other than the old church of St Saviour’s which is now a block of flats. The old playing field we used for time trials for running in I could not find and cannot remember the name of the road.

  • That was actually my grandparents’ house (42 Vere). Guy, Jane and their mum, Pat, lived in a flat below. Strange layout, wasn’t it? I seem to recall going into their front door under an arch – which was the steps going up to the front door of the main house. Yes, you’re right – my Dad was Baloo for the Cubs. He used to really enjoy it, and I think only gave it up when we moved to Patcham. I was dead lucky with my trains, wasn’t I? Originally, my parents used to rent out the top floor of our house, and there was a Scots guy called Hamish who had this train set. When he moved out, he gave the whole lot to me. I still have a few pieces left – but sold a lot in the 70s when I was out of work. My wife and I moved to Cornwall in the early 80s, and I haven’t been back to Brighton since. And yes where was that field?

    By Marc Turner (05/03/2013)
  • The field was in Florence road, I looked it up on Google Earth, it’s still there. I remember we used it for scouts functions too. I still think it’s a lovely area to live inand has not changed one bit really. Wow you have not been back to Brighton since the 80s. Are your parents still alive? Cornwall is a lovely place, a bunch of us used to go there every year on surfing trips back in the 70s and 80s. I went there with Bill Warner (who also went to Downs) three years ago and stayed in Bude at a friends B & B and toured around for a few days- still a beautiful place . My sister is unmarried and works as a dentist in Covent Garden, London. I no longer have any contact with her. My dad passed away two years ago and Mum is in a nursing home with alzheimers – she no longer remembers me. It’s true we had a Pyrenean Mountain dog- my parents gave it to me for making the National swimming finals back in 1968 , I remember you, Kim , Guy and his sister swimming for our rivals Shiverers in those days. My swimming years were great times and Brighton was a great place to grow up in. I remember our Scouts trip to Jersey- how I used to love camping and still do to this day love the outdoor life, collecting fire wood and sitting round a fire under the stars.

  • I can remember the field now – weren’t there fetes and things held there too? Cornwall is a lovely place … for a visit. Not so much fun to live in though – we moved away after 10 years. Mum lives there now, although Dad passed away in 1993. As you say, Brighton was an amazing place to be brought up in – it’s only in retrospect that I realise how brilliant it was. Yeah – those days of BSC vs SSC! The rivalry was quite intense wasn’t it? Does BSC still exist now the North Road Baths are gone, I wonder? And that trip to Jersey was brilliant fun. I can still remember the smell as Mick and Skip made a bonfire of all those cigarettes they found. Must have been thousands of them! And being so scared about smuggling lighters back home, rolled up in our sleeping bags. I have to say, I haven’t been much for the outdoor life since those days, but we did rough it with a 1960s caravan for a few weeks … it was practically a tent.
