This photograph shows the Stanley Road VE day street party 1945. My sister and I are still in touch with Derek Hillman and his sister Norma, Alan Brigginshaw and his sister Ann, Graham Watts Othen from Shaftesbury Road and Ron Newing from Clyde Road.
We would love to hear from Gwen King, Joan and Michael Borer, George and Joan Chapman, Peter Tomsett, Diane Edwards and anyone else who was living around that area in the 1940s to 1960s.

VE day – are you allowed to say that? Not PC in some circles, I gather! I was born the next morning, so it’s good to see the May sun shining for my grand entrance, but they really shouldn’t have gone to all that trouble.
VE day – not allowed to say that? Who came up with that rubbish! Nothing to do with PC, it is part of our history and remembrance of the folk that lost their lives in our country and for our country.

What a fabulous photograph. Does anyone know when the houses on Stanley Road date back to? I’m wondering about the ones on your right hand side as you walk up the hill towards the church. Thanks.
The VE Party our family went to was in Hythe Road which ran at the back of Preston Drove. We lived at 159 Preston Drove and our back garden had a back entrance in Hythe Road. I believe the gardens were cut in half and houses adjacent to Hythe Road are there now. I can remember the long tables full of all the foods that kids love: jellies, cakes and lemonade. Such an occasion to be celebrated. Then of course there was VJ Day.
I well remember the VE Day party held at the top of Hollingbury Rise, Hollingbury. We each had to take a chair and I remember my Dad carrying a kitchen chair up the hill to the flat area of the Rise. The table was covered in party goodies and after eating we children had a “shadow play, (a sheet was erected and a light at the back threw a shadow of those who were in the play). I always remembered the play was of a surgical operation with the patient laying down and the doctor opening him up and removing all sorts of items from the patient, scissors, hammer, a string of sausages etc. All very funny at the time.

Ernest Thomas Adrian Marsh is a Grandad I never met? My info is… He was in Desert Rats. 8th Army. 4th Division.
I believe he could of been with one of 3 brothers. One possibly captured in Italy? Other maybe different surname which I believe was “Freeman”?
He lived in Bounds Green. Wife was Florence, my Nan whom I did meet but she was quite a character and I never was old enough to ask questions.

My nan, Jean Smerdon is in this photograph with her sister Doreen Smerdon and her mum. They lived at number 29. She fondly remembers this day and the photograph being taken. She was delighted when I showed it to her.
