The Duke of York’s cinema was opened on 22nd of September 1910, by the Mayor of Brighton Charles Thomas-Stanford: it was built on the site of the Amber Ale Brewery. It was owned by Mrs Violet Melnotte-Wyatt, the lessor and later manager of the Duke of York’s Theatre in London and was built for a cost of £3,000.
As you can see by the crowds of excited onlookers, the opening of such a luxurious custom built cinema was quite a day for Brighton!
