Open day crowds 102 years ago today

The opening day on September 22 1910
Royal Pavilion and Museums Brighton and Hove

The Duke of York’s cinema was opened on 22nd of September 1910, by the Mayor of Brighton Charles Thomas-Stanford: it was built on the site of the Amber Ale Brewery. It was owned by Mrs Violet Melnotte-Wyatt, the lessor and later manager of the Duke of York’s Theatre in London and was built for a cost of £3,000.

As you can see by the crowds of excited onlookers, the opening of such a luxurious custom built cinema was quite a day for Brighton!
