Our trusty Chief Photographer, Tony Mould, got this great ‘Caught on Camera’ shot while he was on an assignment in Hanover with the Mayor Councillor Bill Randall, who is a Green councillor and a Hanover resident himself.
This log delivery horse and cart is apparently a well-known sight in Hanover, the area known affectionately by the locals as ‘Muesli Mountain’.

Not a delivery, but I well remember seeing the Brighton police horses Roland and Montrose on patrol in the town. One afternoon I saw a lot of people crowded around the police garages above William St. On investigation it revealed they were also [appropriately] the stables! A mobile farrier was shoeing the horses to the great enjoyment of all there, especially the children.
Just a word of thanks for the nice article on us, we both really enjoy our Sunday log delivery and watching the kids feed Buddy (our horse) a carrot -their faces a sight to behold. Also meeting people along the way and having a good chat; people really do love to see the horse and cart. Thanks to all who buy our logs, it’s appreciated – and see you all along the way on Sunday.
I remember when I was a child growing up in Mackie Avenue, Patcham in the early 1950s, a horse-drawn delivery grocers called Laycocks, and the horse used to leave a calling card on the road and all the residents went out with a spade to put it on the garden!
A Mr Dyne the green grocer, used to deliver in the Coombe Rd area. One day when turning out of Baden Rd into Milner Rd the cart turned over and the horse bolted. I was just coming out of Redvers Rd when I saw the horse galloping. A man in front of me took his hat off and threw it across the face of the horse which stopped and reared up. He then went and grabbed hold of it. Mr Dyne gave up delivering and opened a shop at the bottom of Coombe Rd.
