Childhood memories of the 1950/60s

Miller’s famous pies

I was born at 1 Riley Road, off Bear Road, during WW2 and lived there until 1963 when I married.  My grandparents lived at number 6.  As we lived opposite ‘Miller’s Famous Pies’, they were often on the menu for Monday. The corner shop or ‘Mrs Pikes’ as we kids knew it, was the place to go for sweets, and home made ice lollies in the Summer.

An allotment garden

Next to 1 Riley Road was an allotment garden, now a children’s playground, which was tended by Mr Preston. My ball would often ‘accidentally’ go over the fence so that I could climb over and explore. Mrs Preston was a wonderful singer in the choir at St Alban’s church in Coombe Road.

1953 Coronation party

I have found this photo of the Coronation street party of 1953. That is me with the plaits in the front, far left.  I can remember Seymour Matthews, Derek King, and Michael Matthews; all at the near end of the table. Also, John Markwick is half way down on the left, and the Munnery family on the right.

I wonder if anyone can name the others? If you recognise yourself, or anyone else, please leave a comment below.
