  • Talk about a blast from the past. I was in Miss Webb’s class also, but am not in the photo (must have been away that day). Now that you have named people Ron, I recognise many and several went on to Dorothy Stringer School. What a great web site this is.

  • Yes Pat, I think most of the ones that I named went on to Stringer School. Have you seen the school lately? Most of the buildings that were there originally are hidden behind new ones. I think when we went there we started with 400 pupils and now it is over a 1,000. I believe I am right in saying that Danny Daughtry died when he was in his early 30s. I saw an obit in the Argus last year for a Roy Long and the age was right. I did speak to Colin Starley about 6 months ago, but I don’t know about any of the others.

  • Just came across these photos, and that is me in the ’51, 2nd row down third from left, and ’52 same row sixth from left. I can remember three of the girls names mentioned above- Joyce Dunn, Lavinia Parsons and Lesley Tuck, I also remember a boy from the same class, his name was Richard Hazelrig, but I can’t identify him! Wondering if anyone remembers me? I went on to the Fawcet school but only for about a year as we moved to Edinburgh.

  • Hi Kate. Did Barrie Carter, your Dad, go to Varndean? There was a Barrie Carter in my year, I started there in about 1954.

  • I remember Kenneth Hamilton, I think you came to Black Rock one day with parents and you cut your foot? Or is it an imagined memory? I was skinny, curly haired Susan Richardson.

    By Susan Thackeray (10/03/2020)
  • @Susan Thackeray. Susan I just discovered your comment, I remember the cut foot, I think an ambulance came down onto the beach for me! Still have the scar. Moved to Edinburgh aged 12 about 1956, still here. Are you still in Brighton, I was there for a third visit in 2019, I used to live in Old Steine. Nice that you remember me. Ken.

  • Re the 1952 photo; has that blown away some cobwebs.
Yes – I recall you Ken, having been at The Downs & also Fawcett same time as yourself, maybe not always the same class though.
Looking at the photo I do believe that I’m the boy 2nd row down – almost centre – boy on one side & girl on the other. Joyce Dunn & Lesley Tuck were great friends; Lavinia’s name rings a bell too.
I was in 1B initially [M/s Brown?]; 2B – then mid-year – 2A [Miss Knight & Mrs Clarke]; 3A [classroom was over Ditchling Rd – male teacher; scared the pants off us all – very strict & regimented]; 4A Miss
Knight. Mr Emmans was the headmaster as far as I can recall.
I graduated from The Downs in 1956 an extremely naive little boy moving up to Fawcett; what a horrendous shock that was – unbelievable!
Blimey – where has all this come from – I can’t recall what I had for breakfast today but all that info from years back is quite clear.
After 50+ years, I live in Western Australia – always open to visitors 🙂
Happy to have met, sorry to have parted, happy to meet again.
