Memories of the 1950s

Born in Tarner Road

I was born in 1 Tarner Road, off Sussex Street and Richmond Street near the top end; it was to the left of the photo just out of sight. I lived there with my Mum and Dad and older brother Len. We moved from there, needing a third bedroom, to 6 Tilbury Way, where I lived until I married in 1964.

Complete absence of traffic

I am on the right of the photo kneeling down; I would have been 8 or 9 years old at the time. As you can see there was no traffic, not one car. As kids we had the Sussex Street Park next to the Tarner Nursery which we all called the ‘creech’ in which to play. On days when we felt more venturesome, we went to Queen’s Park, sometimes taking lemonade made from 1/4 lb of lemonade crystals and water.

Very different in the 1980s

It was great having the entire street to play in. Hopscotch, ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’ and ‘Hide and seek’ were some of the games we played. What a different world, I never felt in danger at any time. Many years later, in the 1980s when I worked at American Express, I considered myself lucky to find a space here. There were cars parked both sides and it was only two streets away.

  • Hi Jackie. Did you know Joyce Hazelgrove who lived in Tilbury Way?

    By Pam (17/05/2013)
  • Hello Pam. Yes, I know the name but can’t put a face to it.

  • Jackie Joyce had a lovely mum and dad. She had a brother who lived in Tarner Road, he was older than her and she had a friend Joan who lived in the road with the railings in Richmond Street. Joyce married Dave Newman, and Ivy Bungard lived close by to her. I can’t find Joyce, looking for 53 years. I do know they named their first baby Joyce.

  • Hello Pam. I’m afraid I am no help to you, my memory isn’t great but I hope you eventually find her.

  • Thanks anyway Jackie, might be lucky. Bless you.

  • Hi Jackie, don’t suppose you knew / remember my mum and her family? They lived in Tarner Road at this time: Maureen Jenkins / Taylor. I was also born in Tarner Road, a bit later, in 1966. Do you have or know of any more pictures of Tarner Road? Thanks

    By Brad Taylor (29/05/2013)
  • Hello Brad. As with the previous lady on this page, I do remember the name Jenkins. Mostly I suppose with parents chatting to them but I left there at nine and do not remember the faces. I do have one more photo of the 1953 coronation party but it wasn’t good enough to upload on this site as it is quite blurry. So much so that I could never even pick myself out! I did upload it a while back on Facebook’s Brighton Past or Brighton People, can’t remember which one. You may still be able to find it there.

  • Hi Jackie,  could you be the same Jackie who I dated back in the sixties – it must be. Good memories and times. How are you and do you still keep in contact with the old gang – Beryl, Jackie, Maureen etc? What a memory – not bad for an old boy. I have only just found this site and am finding it so interesting  reading about Finsbury Road school etc. I live in Spain now but do keep in contact with the old boys of yesterday. I am not very good with this technology so this post is short and sweet. If you want to then please tell me any news of your family and friends.

  • Hello Brian, yes the very same, nice to hear from you. I don’t check on this site as much as I used to so have only just seen your message. Great site this isn’t it? You may also like the Brighton Past site (you need to be on Facebook to access it) which I use a lot. Have lost contact with everyone from the distant past, you move on, change jobs etc etc. Married twice, widow now with four grandchildren. Ted Baker told me you had moved to Spain when I worked at the Renal Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Still got lots of the old photos, it seems like another world when you look at them now. I am on Facebook if you eventually get your head around the technology! Bye for now.

  • Wow!! how nice to hear from you after all those years, unfortunately I don’t use face book I leave all that to my wife Ronna she is on everyday because we are both involved with animal rescue over here which turns out to be a full time job mainly for her these days she has a lot more energy than me dealing with cats and dogs, raising funds to help the rescue centres and paying vet bills etc etc.our house is always full of kittens and sometimes puppies which can get a bit out of hand but Ronna loves it.Rita is living in Bexhill and divorced from John,Jean is in Burgess Hill with Eddy her husband of many many years, the only one of us still married to her first and Mike is in Findon with his wife Irene.Mum passed away at 90 and Dad at 93 so maybe there’s a possibility of me becoming an old man, well older than I am now.I still keep in contact with Ted and Mavis and have invited them over in the past but now that Mavis is not too well I don’t think that will happen.Anyway nice to hear from you.Take care.

  • Hi Brian,

Nice to still have all your siblings around. I am the only one left from our family, I have one cousin out of all Mum and her sisters families and she’s in her 80s!  I live in Burgess Hill too now, we moved here a year before Dave retired in 2001. I lost Dad in 1967 at 66 and Mum in 1978 at 77, then my three brothers over the years. I have grandchildren, Aimee 20, Hannah 18, Jack 17 and Olivia 10, she keeps me busy the youngest one! Glad you are all fighting fit, keep it up and please give my best to all.

  • Hi Jennifer
I am sure he would have loved to look and comment on this page but sadly he passed away around 4 years ago.
I was curious if any of the other people in the photo remembered him.
Lovely to see that photo as I hadn’t seen it before, my mum sent it to me which is why I went on the web page.
