Photographs circa 1948/50

I went to the Richmond Street Infants School which was at the bottom of Sussex Street and Richmond Street. I seem to remember my mother taking me in an entrance in Richmond Street. When I first started I remember trailing around with a teacher, holding on to her apron, and crying for my Mum.

The first photograph is our Harvest Festival and was taken c1948/50. I am on the right hand side in the middle row with the Fair Isle cardigan and plaits. The second photograph was taken in the playground right next to caretaker’s house and garden. I am second row from the back second in with plaits and a fringe.

Unfortunately I cannot remember any names. If you recognise yourself, or anyone else, or can share your memories of this time, please leave a comment below.

  • I went to this school, although I always knew it as Sussex St. Infants. I think the boy far left middle row is Barry Gumbrell and the girl 2nd from right middle is Carrol Ustace.

The 2nd photo Maybe Michael Vallier, top far right and John Bushby 2nd right sitting.

I’ll be good to hear from anyone there wants to contact me by email, I’m at, geoffrey.wells1@gmail.com

  • Hello Geoff; once more late to a conversation but have only just discovered this photo. Like you I knew the school as Sussex St. Infants. Wish I could date the photo but feel it is more c1950. I’m the kid in the back row wearing a tie, only one anyway! I seem to recall a teacher by the name of Miss Clutterbuck; other memories include bottles of orange juice, canvas beds in the hall for ‘sleeps’ & a row boat out in the playground. Where the photo was taken outdoors I think is at the fence line behind which was the caretaker’s house. [I may be wrong but I think you & I may have another connection too – DoR #3143?]
I’ve lived in Western Australia since 1969 but get back to Brighton from time to time; always good for a reunion – just a bit slower on my feet now.
Happy for any contacts on nigel.buxton@bigpond.com.
