“This is a lovely, simple building in the centre of Brighton. It’s now a firm of solicitors but it started off as the home for a Mr. Millar who owned a bakery in the centre of Brighton. I think this is a good example of buildings from that period – it’s simple, elegant and comfortable.”

  • Nigel – I had no idea you had commented on No 15. I have been trying to find some history on it. How did you know it was built by the Millars? Have you any other information please?

  • This was the home of Isaac Bass, a very wealthy grocer in Brighton. He was a Quaker and was mayor of Brighton in 1856. In 1857 he was made an alderman.

  • Kelly’s Directory 1867 for Brighton with Hove & Cliftonville, shows John Catt, Esq. living at Albert House, 15 Prince Albert St. He is one of my ancestors.

  • To Martin Diplock: you won’t remember me, but I used to work for your father’s firm as the tea maker for everyone and also had to clean the silver every Monday morning. Yuk, I hated that part of the job. I did just about every menial job that was going. I joined in July 1972 and even remember Jim Traynor.
