A coastal fortification?

This print was published in June 1785 by S. Cooper and shows the “Blockhouse” Brighthelmstone. The location of this building is unknown and was possibly a fortification on the coast close to the town.

  • This remant of the Henrican block house is a well known feature of the seafront and its location is indeed known. It is worth taking a look at the Yeakell and Gardner map of Brighton on the late 1770s. There is an earlier map – reproduced in Sussex Archaological Collections fairly recently that also helps – as does the article – see J.H. Farrant – article about the antiquarian Francis Grosse.
