Restoration of the roof

The Station Roof deserves a mention of its own. A fantastic restoration job on a major local landmark. I took this photo when they first took the wraps off.

  • I understand that the work done on the roof of the station won an enginering design award.

  • My dad was a plumber working for a local building firm, (F.T. Wilsons & Sons Ltd). He was made redundant in the 1950s and got a job working for the railway. He worked on stations throughout Sussex doing maintenance work, but his main job was looking after the roof at Brighton Station which he did until his retirement in 1985. He always said the whole lot wanted renewing, but British Rail who owned it always said there was not enough money to do it.
