  • I used to live in Mighell Street. Does anyone remember the Black Lion pub? My family lived next door to it and one time a boy called Melvin lived there. Can’t remember surname or parents’ names – it was very lively.

  • I had drinks sometimes with Dave Spider Webber from Milner Flats.

  • That’s a name from the past. Used to drink with Spider back in the 60s in the Seven Stars along with Brian Marshall from the flats in Albion Hill. Lost touch years ago.

  • I lived in George Street but I remember the Black Lion pub very well, my parents often went in there.  There used to be a little bar at the back and the entrance to this was at the side of the pub where there was also a yard, which I think belonged to Virgos which was a plumbing and builders who also had a shop in Edward Street. Also there was a pub on the corner of Mighell Street that was I think called The Standard. Alot of trawler fishermen used the Blackhorse pub and it was where we had the present Queen’s coronation street party. All the kids were in fancy dress and I remember a man dressed up as Al Jolson and what a great day it was. I wonder if any one has any photos of that day.

  • Spider was a drinking pal of mine at the Blue House in the mid to late sixties when I lived in Albion Hill. A varied bunch of lads would meet there and go on to enjoy whatever little Brighton had to offer teenagers in those days. I remember Spider very fondly and I last spoke to him in The Albion Inn about ten years ago or so. Sadly, I believe he’s passed away now – I saw a bereavement notice in the Argus last July and I’m pretty sure it was for him.

  • Hi Chris, how are you doing. Must be 20 years since we last saw each other. I still see Bob Raynsford when he’s over (he’s coming for Jubilee week). Keep in touch and let’s meet for a drink sometime. My email is davidwhatman@aol.com

  • Is Dave Whatman any relation to the Whatmans that lived in Manor Road?

    By Duffy (12/04/2013)
  • We lived right opposite the Black Lion. Family name Williams.

  • Hi Chris Taylor and Dave Whatman, just seen your comments (8 years later) concerning Dave Spider Webber.
Dave was my cousin. My twin brother and I lived with him at Milner Flats. I left to join the Medical Corps, and Michael, my brother moved out a few years earlier when he married. Yes, Dave passed away in 2011. I was living in France at the time, so received the news with shock and disappointment that I couldn’t get to the funeral.
I live near Weston Super Mare, and still have fond memories of Brighton, occasionally visiting my brother.
