I too have a copy of this photo and had only recently been looking at it trying to remember who my fellow pupils were, but could only remember a few. For me it was great seeing this with the names. Two mistakes – Leslie Herritt was Esme and Pamela Collins (me) should be Pamela Heath (as was). I have many happy memories of my infant and junior days at Elm Grove. I didn’t progress to the seniors as I went to another school. I too cannot remember which year, but I think it was 1950.
Does anyone remember my mother who attended this school – Linda Frances Butler?
I remember Mr Linley, my class teacher, as a very nice man usually, except he smacked my hand for misspelling the word ‘when’, I wrote ‘wen’. My brother David and sister Maria also attended Elm Grove.
What a suprise! Brings back so many memories. Alive and kicking and still live locally.
Joyce Grenville’s name should be Josephine Cutler. I still have this photo in a album at home.
Girl top/back row left hand corner should be Josephine Cutler not Joyce Grenville. Many thanks to Pauline for putting me right.
I am standing on the back row second from the right. I cannot believe this photo is still in existance. I now live in Ontario, Canada. Would love to be in contact with some of my class mates from the 50s. Such as Esme, Rita Oakley. Gwen Knott, Dorreen Spain. I cannot remember all the names, I thought our teachers name was Mr Hughs he tried to unravel maths for me. Alas he did not succeed. I am still a bit of a dunce in that department. Yes Josephine Cutler was a friend of mine too.
I am standing on the back row second from the right. So you have my name incorrect. I cannot believe this photo is still in existance. I now live in Ontario, Canada. Brian Steyning and David Hansome were always my very good friends. Please write to me if you can. Hi Valerie, sorry I spelt your name wrongly [got the first bit right though]. That is Mr Linley in the photo, I remember Mr Huges, he was bald if i remember right. I hope to hear from you, regards.
I am not in this photo but have one which looks so much like it. Mr Cashmore is standing in the same place but our teacher was Miss Saunders. My photo was taken in 1949 I think, when I was in the first years. If it is the same girl, Valerie Woodham lived in my road (Upper Wellington Road) and we were friends. She had a brother Ronnie and a sister Pauline. I attended Elm Grove Juniors from 1949-1953 when I went to Varndean. I also went to the Infants.
Hi every one, I have just come back to this site as my brother Ron has started his searches. I remember you Janet Rodgers and your sister who was older than you and actually had a job but I’m not sure where. She was a great reader and I admired her a lot. I remember coming to tea at your house. We had such a charming child hood. We were always trying to solve mysteries. My school memories are very clear. Even though I was a bit of a dreamer I loved my class and my class mates. Please write to me if you think you know me as I would love to know how every one went through life.
I lived next door to Leslie, David and Maria Carter in Picton St. I left Picton St when I was 12 years old.
Hello all. Can anyone throw any light on Mr Cashmore, the teacher in this photo? I am his son and would love to hear any memories or anecdotes about him, (good or bad!). Thanks
Hello Roger Cashmore. How nice to ask for memories of your father. I attended Elm Grove Infants, Junior and Senior Schools. Mr Cashmore was the headmaster of the Junior School. He was a lovely, gentle and caring man – always stopped to listen to you when you needed him, and was much loved by all.
Hi Roger. I attended Elm Grove Junior School 1946 – 50 and remember your dad with great affection. A big, bluff Lancastrian whom I once remember telling us about once travelling by bus in a new fawn overcoat and sitting next to a miner who had just come off shift. Do you have a brother Christopher(?) as I remember a school trip to Hampton Court in summer 1950. Your Dad came with us and asked us to keep an eye on his son who came too. I’d be interested to know what happened to your Dad after he left Elm Grove.
Hi my uncle – David Hopkins – is in this photo – he is now 81! I will print it out and send it to him, he will be delighted and I am sure will remember everyone. He still lives in Totland Road, if anyone remembers him? (My mum Sylvia Joan’s brother)
Thanks for putting this here for us all.
Nicola Ward.
