When I get round to it, there are many pictures of the hurricane in my collection. Having the time, these will be scanned and some will be contributed here. There are also pictures of Council and Gamble employees moving the fallen debris in early 1988. There are also some dramatic pictures of fallen Beech trees in Stanmer Park.
I’ve also got loads of pictures because I was unable to go to work the following day and just toured the Preston area with my camera. I will go through them again and submit the best for others to view and hopefully this will provoke others to do so, likewise enabling more of us to see a far wider selection of photos taken at the time than is presently available.
I worked at Tesco for 5 years from 1980 when they had just expanded into what was the Co-op and were taking on more staff. Who remembers the Co-op which was on the left as you faced the shops? This picture is on the side where the Co-op was, and led to the bridge to the Brighton Centre. I was amazed that the bridge was removed when Churchill Square was rebuilt. I took a lot of photos and a fair bit of video around Churchill Square during my time there. And by the way, never call Tesco ‘Tescos’ – they hate it!
I worked here from 1980-85. It’s where I met my darling wife, Lizzy. I’m pretty sure that’s the manager, Mr Woolnough, in the photo wearing a grey suit and tie.
Andy, you worked there at the same time as me exactly. I never noticed until your comment, that the manager is in the photo.
It is amazing that they are letting a customer shop and a woman sweep the floor so near to that lethal looking broken window which is not supported on the left and could drop out any second, and while the manager is watching!
I worked at Tesco in the early 80’s, whilst at college, on the tills. Forgotten about Mr Woolnough. He gave me my job as he used to work at the Seven Dials Branch with my mum. I remember Bejams on the lower floor of the Square.
Is that the same Mr. Woolnough who used to run the Crawley branch? He gave me my job as a Saturday boy in the Produce department in 1978, where I stayed for 18 months. Good bloke, although he could come across as a bit grumpy.
I was working in Brighton at the Hanningtons department store when the storm hit .I took a taxi to work that morning I noticed several trees had fallen into the main road . We had no power in the shop and were guiding people around by candle light .Each day we would write down the takings in a big diary .On each day would be the corresponding figure from the previous year . So we could establish if trade was improving .On the day after the storm instead of writing a figure we just wrote ” Gone with the Wind “
