In the 50s and 60s, the Greyhound was one of those pubs that many of us youngsters avoided because of the gender preference of several amongst its clientelle. How times have changed, and looking at it now, with its ghastly colour and tasteless new name, I would love to have it back as it once was.
My father-in-law John Westacott was landlord of this pub in around the early fifties. Does anyone remember him? A tall ex-guardsman who then went on to manage The Abinger opposite the then West Pier. He also managed The County Oak at Hollingbury.
I agree with Roy. I also grew up in town knowing what type of pub the Greyhound was! But I never heard of any trouble there.
When you see this it is very sad. I used to go to this pub late 1970s. What a mess Brighton has become. Very sad.
I agree with Julie. The south end of East Street in general is a disgrace.
I would be very interested in speaking to anyone who is willing to talk about The Greyhound pub and their memories of it before it became The Fishbowl, I’m a student at Brighton University and currently doing a history project on the development of Brighton as a Gay Capital City and would love some first hand accounts of the history of such an iconic pub. My name’s Ed Hopkins, (www.edhopkins.co.uk) I’m trying to compile a google map of all the venues I have played in as a musician over the years, I spent some time in Brighton in 1992 working as a duo called “Kaelia” with a girl singer named Coral (last name lost to the mists of time if I ever knew it), we had a residency in what I seem to remember being called The Greyhound although I’m by no means sure, my recollection of those halcyon days is somewhat hazy. If anyone can remember live music at this pub in 1992, or even better a boy/girl duo with only a synthesiser to back us up playing original material and covers please post a comment.
My mum (Gladys Penfold aged 17) and my dad (Elgin Smith aged 22) met at this pub in August 1945. They were married 3 weeks later on 8 September at Patcham. After 2 weeks together dad went back to the Air Force and they didn’t see each other again for months, until mum arrived in Sydney Australia on a troop ship as a war bride. They were married for 64 years.
I remember drinking there 1970 – 1973, I also found a job on the Marina construction Aug to Oct 1973 getting money to return to Melbourne.
