The Viaduct, by J.F. Burrell, 1852. From the 'My Brighton' exhibit
From a private collection
This drawing shows the repairs to the viaduct following bombing on the 25th May when two arches and a pier were destroyed. Allegedly the gap was bridged, with iron girders, within a day and the arches and pier rebuilt within a month. This enabled vital war supplies to be transported once more. The view is from the north looking south.Text by John Blackwell, 14-05-03

Dear Sir, I would have been about 5 when the viaduct was bombed. I remember how comparitively quickly it was temporarily spanned and then rebuilt. Much later I attended the Technical College which stood near those footings. Later I used to go loco spotting on the cliff top above the Hove line and the sheds. I now work on the Mid-Norfolk Railway at Dereham where we have a Brighton built 1954 baltic tank – 80078 on loan.
