I lived in Shanklin Road from the age of 6 months to 18 years old (1973-1991). There used to be a dye factory called Shanklin Dyers situated at the intersection where Shanklin Road turns right up the hill. I remember that there always used to be a big puddle of dye or some other chemical outside of the factory. In these more PC times, it would cause uproar today. I also remember the Forfars bakery that was based at the top of Bembridge Road, Whippingham Street and partly in Shanklin Road. I lived opposite the bakery and can still remember the smell of baking bread in the morning.

I lived in Shanklin Road from 1956 through to the 1960s. Running along the back was railway track higher than the houses; two trains a day came along. The land was all overgrown and made the area look like countryside and made it very peaceful. To remove it must have been a mammoth task, but I had moved on by then. There was a grocers shop opposite number 11 Shanklin Road (well almost opposite).

I grew up on Whippingham St and remember the Forfars bakery very well. I was born in 1984 so I never knew it while it was in use, but obviously it provided a point of fascination for the local kids. We spent a lot of time on the little forecourt for rollerskating and you could see into the derelict building though cracks. We got in just once, though a side entrance and were so scared of the building collapsing (unlikely really, it wasn’t that old or that long out of use, but we were about eight) on us we didn’t stay long!

In my infant/junior schooldays I remember Valerie Chapman who lived in 3,5,or 7 Shanklin Rd in the basement. Also Pat Novis who lived in Inverness Rd adjoining the shoe repair shop (Harold) – I do believe that she emigrated to Oz. If anyone can give me any information into these names I will be very grateful. Ray

I lived in Shanklin Road in the early 80s. Me and my sister Tracey have some good memories of Shanklin Road- the dye factory at the bottom of the road, Forfars bakers up the top of the road. They were the good days.
