Carved from a fallen tree

This sculpture was created from a fallen tree by a local sculptor, Reece Ingram, in 1991. It stands behind Stanmer House on a grassy hillside called `The Pleasureground’.

Tree planted by the Earl of Chichester
It is carved from a 163 year old Cedar of Lebanon that fell, not in the hurricane of October 1987, but in the 1989 storm. The tree was originally planted by the Earl of Chichester, who lived at Stanmer House and imported a collection of specimen trees.

Funded by American Express
The badger sculpture took 8 months to create (on and off). It was funded by American Express. It’s intended not only to be looked at, but also climbed on.
