The view across the main A23 London Road towards Patcham Fountain, and looking up the hill towards the church, the spire of which may be seen among the trees. Note the “tea-rooms” on the right, with chewing gum machine and Coka-Cola sign; a popular teatime halt for London-bound day-trippers.

My Nan Mrs Elphick used to live in the first cottage on the left up Church Hill. I remember the stairs to the upper floor were like a ladder. My Uncle Bert used to live with my Nan until sometime in the 50s when she fractured her hip and both my Nan and Uncle Bert came to live with us in Crabtree Avenue, Hollingbury.
To add to the comments from Brian Baldock. I am his older sister with similar memories when our Nan used to live at Church Hill. I attended Patcham school and would love to walk over from school in the lunch break and have soup with my Nan in her tiny kitchen.
Emily, Can I ask when you attended Patcham School(s)? I was at Patcham from 1943 to 1950, so Infants, Juniors and some Seniors before I passed to go to Brighton Junior Tech. Also did a year at the old school in London Road. Please let me know.
