  • This photo was obviously taken from what was then called the Palace Pier. I lived almost opposite the West Pier in Bedford Square during the late 40s. It was a charming spot, good for chamber music and cream teas. Very different to the younger, brash pier to the east, famous for “What the butler saw” and candy floss.
    My violin tutor, Mark Java, played matinees on the West Pier. My only attempt at making money from playing the violin was made on the beautiful bandstand near the pier entrance. I think I earned about two bob.
