Notes and queries: Diplocks

From Joy, query e-mailed to My Brighton and Hove website, 07/04/2001

Can you tell me any history of a company called Diplock? The address was 29 Western Rd, Hove. I have a commemorative mug (1897) manufactured there. Was just curious about the company. It appears it no longer exists.

Response – a company called Diplock

From Jan Hill, My Brighton and Hove volunteer, 28 June 2001

“I had a look for Diplocks in the directories and found the following.

S. Diplock was in 29 Western Road as a china and glass merchant as far back as 1862. At that time there was also S Diplock, in the same trade, at 62 Kings Road, Brighton. Further back, in 1856, there was H Diplock, china and glass warehouse, at 18 Western Rd and, in 1850, Samuel Diplock, china and glass warehouse at 8 Upper Market Street, Hove. “

  • Would be very interested in any information on numbers 188-189 Western Road for 1901. My grandmother’s sisters lived at these addresses, large establishments as No.188 had 12 boarders and No.189 had 9 boarders. Would like to know if these buildings are still standing and if there are any photos of them, past and present.

  • Wades department store occupied 188-189-190 Western Road. My grandfather, W J Wade, started his store in 1895 and expanded. I too would like to know more about when he expanded and whether he purchased those buildings. There is a good photo of Wades on this website, and yes it is still there. I do remember hearing of the widening of Western Rd early in the 1900s. I hope this is helpful, let me know any information you might find out.

  • Your feature on Western Road is very interesting to me as my great great grandfather lived at No.79 and then at No.81 Western Road in the first half of the nineteenth century. He ran a building and decorating business from there. I also believed his brother Charles Smith might have operated from this street from about the 1820s. Does anyone know anything about this business or the Smith family? My great great grandfather was George Arthur Smith and his son was George Edward Smith.

  • Does anybody remember a hairdressing shop on Western Road in the 1940s going by the name of Reckin? It was owned by my Grandfather. There was also a cake shop nearby.

  • Does anyone know anything about the ‘Western Hotel’ in Western Road? It’s now ‘The Juggler’ (number 21).  Apparently my great great great grandfather Frederick Ewer ran it in the 1890s. The story goes that he lost it through drink and gambling and ended up in the workhouse (where you can find him in the 1901 census).

  • I remember the old Western pub, my mum and aunty used to go there for a couple nearly every night when I was little in the 1950s.  I used to stand in the entrance doorway to the bar off the main Western Road, and I got lots of lemonades and crisps off all my mum’s friends who came and went. It was a very friendly pub and there was always a lot of laughter from inside.  I was allowed in a couple of times but not for long.  On Christmas Eve, Mum, Aunty and me used to go over the road to the church at the bottom of Cambridge Road to Midnight Mass.

  • Can anyone help me with information on a G.W Ryde and Sons, artist and colourmen, 73 Western Road Brighton?

Their label appears on a watercolour I purchased recently and as the work is not signed I am hoping that the shop might give some clues to the paintings date.
    Many thanks

  • Does anyone have any information or photo of 98 Western Road? Around 1900 it was a ladies’ tailor shop owned by my great grandfather, Maurice Rose.  The shop is currentley occupied by ‘Into Hair’.

  • I am clearing out old papers and have come across the copy of a lease for No. 42 Western Road, Hove dated 3 May 1852 between Mr George Croft Senior and Mr G H Copstick. Does anyone know who or what is at their address now? And is there an archivist for Brighton and Hove who would be interested in having this?
