  • My goodness I am sure I have a photocopy of this view that was taken c1950.  If I am right then the greengrocers was one of my great grandfather’s shops, he sold to Sainburys in 1922.  The next building on the opposite corner would have been a Private Hotel called ‘Rex’.

  • I had to catch a bus outside Woolworths to get home from school every day in the early 1970s. My favourite shop was the record shop ‘Tilbury Gig’. Browsing in there for the latest T.Rex, Slade or David Bowie record meant many a missed number 3 bus. The 1A came soon after but meant a longer walk.

  • Bravo Paul. I passed that place a million times. For me, it was the birthplace of Britpop, a cultural efflorescence amid the banality of Brighton. Let it not be forgotten.

  • Tilbury Gig was a cultural oasis. I bought Argus by Wishbone Ash there and still have it in vinyl with the original Tilbury Gig price tag. Two quid and 35p. Love and peace to all Brightonians.
