Underwater photographs: Summer 2006
These unique photographs were taken by Christian Black of the famous West Pier in the summer of 2006. The very low spring tides of this year enabled Christian to virtually wade out to the first landing stage of the pier and finally to dive into the murky depths of its underbelly. He describes it as an adventure similar to the discovery of the famous “RMS Titanic” wreck, and no less exciting!
Like an old shipwreck
The pier itself is in a very dangerous condition at the far end, with large pieces of metal hanging on by a thread and is certainly not recommended as a diving area. Large shards of sharp metal protrude from the ground and every twist and turn has its potential danger. Like an old shipwreck, the far end of the pier has become a virtual haven for a myriad of sea life with large congers, lobsters, starfish and many forms of crustacean inhabiting the tangled seabed of this once fine Victorian pier.
A grand old lady
Maybe this is a fitting epitaph for a grand old lady who has stood the test of time through fame, controversy, storms and fire. Only in the future will we realise that we have lost one of the finest Victorian piers in Britain when she finally reverts to nature.
The photographer
Christian Black is originally from Chichester and is a world renowned photographer in the world of “Kite Surfing”. His assignments have taken him all over the world where he continues to seek new dimensions to add to his special brand of photography in the world of extreme sports. As a local person he intends to add further assignments to his Brighton portfolio and hopefully we shall see the benefit of those on the site in the future.
