Photographed c1955

This is a photographic print of Carlton Place, Brighton. It is a view along the street revealing deserted land on the left of the street and slum housing on the right.

This photograph was commissioned by the Environmental Health department of Brighton Borough Council. It formed part of a visual record of areas considered for slum clearance. Carlton Place was purchased by the Council under the Grosvenor Street Compulsory Purchase Order of the mid-1950s. The buildings were demolished and the street considerably shortened in about 1960. Cambridge Place, a block of flats, was erected on the site of this street.
