  • I am looking for information about a family in New England Street in the 1940s and 1950s. Does anyone know of a Cecil Walder Leonard and his wife Florence? They had about four or five children, and one son was called Stanley. Cecil was born in South Africa. What a pity these characterful houses were demolished. I am sure the families needed better accommodation, but the sense of community was hard to beat as this lovely photo shows.

  • I lived in New England Street until it was demolished at No 15. It was lovely to see the photos of Mr and Mrs Prince’s Golden Wedding, I remember the Prince family very well. I would love to see any other photos of New England Street. So I hope anyone who has photos could kindley send them in?

  • Hi to you all New England Street boys now old chaps. Does any body remember the Burrells at no 69 ,and Derek Mann at no 70? I’am sure you all remember old Bert Burrell my dad who used to drink at the pub in the street called the Merry Harriers and then we went back to own the New England Inn and started a football team and darts team. My brothers Chris and Alan live in Brighton – I now live in Newhaven and drive the miniature train at Paradise Park so come along with the grand kids and say hi. It would be nice to see some of you all again, ta ta.

  • Hi Michael, Christine Brindley here, hope you are well. I was talking to Chris only last week. If you have any pictures of New England Street or the family when they were younger, it would be nice to see them. Regards

  • Does anyone remember an Alan Mann who played piano at the Imperial Hotel?

    By Barrie Searle (29/06/2014)
  • I remember very well the Mann family, Alan and I think May was his wife, children Derek and Janet, they lived opposite us in New England Street. We lived at number 15, with my grandparents Albert and Amelia Potter. My mum was Mary and my dad was Tony, brothers Tony, Ray and Terry. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers us. Chris Brindley (Halstead).

  • Does anyone remember the Lace family?

    By Barrie Searle (17/06/2015)
  • I lived in New England Street with my mum, dad and brother. My mum’s name was May, my dad was Richard, everyone called him Dick, my brother was also called Richard and my name is Pat. My mum had triplets when we lived there then we moved when they were 2 years old. We lived at No 10. I remember the Burrells and the Mans, the Greens, and Ball. And The Merry Harriers – we sat outside there a few times – it was my dad’s drinking pub Saturday nights. They were good old days I had when I lived there. You could leave your door open when you went out without any fear of anyone going into your house. In those days people were lovely, they would help anyone. I’m glad I was born when I was and lived there and knew Brighton and the people how it used to be back then in the 1940s and 50s.

  • My great-grandparents, Frederick and Charlotte Catling, are in this photo. Charlotte is seated at the far end of the table, wearing a hairnet or something similar, and Frederick is standing behind her, slightly to the right. They are at the opposite end of the trestle table 2 years later in the coronation party photo I posted on the other New England Street page.

  • This is a bit late in the day, but various people were asking about pictures of the area. The James Gray Collection [recently revamped] of local images has several of New England Street-https://images.regencysociety.org/street/new-england-street-3/
The old images are now paired with the current views of the same locations and with added script. The collection is now listed by street name so you may also need to look at New England Rd and the adjoining streets that were there.
