k) UPPER ROCK GARDENS: The eastern side is lined with large houses built from 1879 in the grounds of the East Lodge, the home of the Earl of Egremont for many years. The western side, however, consists of early-nineteenth-century three- and four-storey houses, many with bows. The listed no.15 has a cobbled front, a bow faced in mathematical tiles, and a distinctive doorway at the side. Also listed are the two terraces, nos.16-18 which have verandahs, and nos.19-26, all dating from the 1810s. No.3, probably by Wilds and Busby, is included on the council’s local list. {44,83,108}
