c) STANMER CHURCH: Standing on the site of a fourteenth-century church destroyed by fire, Stanmer Church was erected in 1838 but has an unknown dedication. Now listed, it was built in Early English style with a thin western tower and spire, and is faced in knapped flint with stone dressings. On the north wall of the nave is a memorial of 1580 to Sir John Pelham. The ecclesiastical parish of Stanmer has been united with Falmer since 1835, and also with Moulsecoomb from 1956 until 1976. {1,228}

  • I was christened at Stanmer in 1957. Sadly, the church is now closed for services. My grandfather Duncan McDougall was churchwarden for a number of years during the 1950s to ’60s and is buried, together with his wife Stella and a daughter Primrose, in the churchyard.

  • Members of Stanmer Preservation Society open the church from 2-4 pm (5 in the summer) in order to allow visitors to have a look around. They have a licence for a year at a time (from the church) to do so and to stop it from being closed and possibly ‘boarded up’. If you were married, christened or have any special memories of the church please let them know as they are trying to put up displays within the church to keep its history alive.

  • On Sunday 20th October at 3pm there will be a Harvest Handbells concert in the church. Also in the concert will be storytelling, folksinging and harvest songs. Admission is free but donations would be most welcome.

  • Our choir at St Mary Magdalene, Coldean, were ‘drafted in’ to sing at weddings and other occasional services at both Stanmer and Falmer churches. I was involved in the late ’60s and early ’70s.
