I was at the infants school from 1942 to 1946 and then into the junior school until 1948 when I moved St Lukes Terrace. In the infants school Miss Saddington was the headteacher and she dressed in a long black dress and looked like the witch in Snow White. My form teachers included Mrs Grey who was nice and Miss Crowhurst who was not so nice. A Miss Fagg took over as Heatmistress in about 1945. The highlights of the year included May Day and Christmas and getting American Chocolate powder which which the teachers handed out in little bags made of newspaper. In the Junior School the headmasters were Mr Morris and then Mr Lloyd. The highlight of the week was when Mr Roberts took the class for handicrafts and then read us stories from Toytown and her impersonated the toys such as Larry the Lamb and Mr Grouser. My friends included David Pettit. Tommy Tilley, Robin West and David Downs. Another boy was Stanley Green used to retell stories that his grandmother used to read him. Amongst the girls were Joyce Pratt and Jeniffer Sharpe whose father was the chemist in Coombe Road. I have lost contact with everyone at the school and sadly no photos either. I would love to here from anyone who remembers me. I was quite chubby with ginger hair, since long gone, and I lived in Carlyle Avenue. I still live in Brighton.

Hello David, my wife Rita, her sisters Pauline and Ann along with her brother Alan Tiley attended Combe Road School during the late 1940s. I wonder if you can remember any of them?
What a surprise to see this photo, I am 3rd from the left in front row and my name was Ann Baldock in those days and I lived in Dewe Rd. I now live in Hawaii and fondly remember my happy childhood days in Brighton, even though I had to wear wellington boots as money was short and new shoes would be a luxury we could not afford at that time. However I never felt poor and loved my childhood days and my family.Thanks for the memories. Aloha !!!
Lovely to see this on here. Jean and Jean are both in New Zealand would love to hear from anyone at Coombe Road from 1943 to 1951. We both went on to Moulsecoombe Girls school along with Diana Clark, Eve Young, Heather Leggat. Gillian Turner (now in Spain), Brenda Collins,J oyce Weller (now deceased), Judy Thompson. I have some of the photos of the swimming team with Mr Roberts and will try and pop them on here in a couple of weeks time. I went to school with Pat Sharp whose dad was the chemist in Coombe Road. Anyone remember the Boltons Fish and Chip shop? My maiden name was Watts, I went to Coombe Rd. Must have been 1943- 1947 or around then. Anyone remember me?
I was at school with Monica Sharp, whose dad was the chemist in Coombe Road. He used to wear a hearing aid and my mother used to get a small bottle of Horlicks from him (under the counter as the war was still on). I remember Joyce Pratt who thought that she was posh and would never eat the school dinners, and her friend Anne (?) Mitchell. They lived at Bevendean and the boys used to follow them home via Jacobs Ladder from the top of Eastbourne Road down to Bevendean. Miss Simmons was my class teacher in 3B. In the terrible winter of 1947, I moved to St Lukes Terrace School as my parents had taken a Fish and Chip shop in Southover Street. My pals were David Pettit who lived in Nesbit Road, David Pannet who lived in Eastbourne Road, Robin West who lived in Milner Road and Tom Tilley, whose father was a master stone mason. The highlight of the week was to be taken by Mr Roberts for handwork and afterwards he would read us ToyTown stories and impersonate the characters like Larry the Lamb. Happy Days David Pierce

Who could forget you, Judith! Did you know that Coombe Road is celebrating its centenary this year and I believe former pupils are invited to attend in May 2012. email the school for details. Would be lovely to meet up with all those young children, who are now galloping into their dotage. Can’t wait!
Hi Linda. Had no idea Coombe Road is celebrating its Centenary this year. What date will it be? I would love to come back and see everyone again, BUT we will all need to be issued with BIG name badges with BIG writing so as to recognise one another after 60 years! I was at Coombe Road up to 1949. My best friend was Robin West mentioned above, I also remember David Pettit, David Pannet, Tommy Tilley and David Hotson. I was in contact with Robin until a short while ago. I thought John Roberts was a magic teacher and I used to go and visit him at home for some years after I left. I’d forgotten about Larry the Lamb! Whilst enjoying my daily rummage through MyB&H web I spotted the name Martyn Surman. I am not part of the Coombe Road gang but I do know a Martyn Surman. Hi, Martyn, Did you know your fame is already on the web here? If not go to Local Folks-Pantomimes. And also Lewes Road Gilbert and Sullivan Society. I think you’ll find you are in both photos there. If it is the same ‘you’, I remember you well. Your mother and father too. Best wishes.

I must have been off school so often that I can’t see myself in any of the school photos. I started at Coombe Rd in 1948 until about 1954 ish. I was in Miss Reeves’ class and Miss Grey’s in the infants, Mr Bear’s, Miss Walters’ and Mr Yardley’s in the juniors. I had many a slap from Mr Bear and Miss Walters. My class mates were Lorraine Taylor, Gillian Phillpots, Carol Austin, Brinny Jones. I wonder if anyone remembers Janet Sharman- she used to live in Ladysmith Rd. Happy days
Remember her? She’s my sister! She now lives in Barnham, married to Richard Wilkins with two daughters and two grandchildren.
I was invited back to Coombe Road School for their centenary along with my two sisters Frances and Janet. We were made very welcome and were amazed at how the old place had developed over the years, the teaching staff are incredible and the pupils a credit to them. My dad and uncle, plus two aunts, went to the school when it was almost new, so we Sharmans go back a long way at Coombe Road School! My brother Frank, sadly now dead, was a pupil the school remembered well – in the punishment book mostly! He was a very bright boy, but bored and disruptive and had his own full page of entries in the dreaded book. We asked if we might present an award in his memory, which the Head suggested could be for citizenship rather than academic prowess. We have now been back two years running to give the award to two very deserving pupils. I think we “oldies” can rest easy that Coombe Road is still doing teriffic job under trying conditions and I’m proud to say I am a old boy of C.R.S.
I think that is me in the exact centre of the picture. I started at Coombe Road in 1947 and remember my first day so vividly. Threading large green wooden beads onto a piece of string. I also remember Jennifer Grout from the Baker’s family being in my class.
I remember the apply named Mr Bear. He was an awful man and not a good teacher. I remember Tina and had some good fun up the cats creek with her. I also remember Carol Austen and Gillian Philpot. Brinny Jones rings a bell – I wonder if he was related to Vanda. Monica Sharpes’ dad owned the house I was born in, and I remember she fancied my brother Bob, who I have to say was good looking ??.

I remember a Terry Scrase who lived in Milner Road, any relation? I was a friend of Robin West, Monica Sharp, Anne Mitchell, Stanley Green,Tommy Tilly, David Petitt and David Pannet.
I left 3B (Miss Simmons) in 1947 and went to St Lukes Terrace School. I attended the School Centenary in 2013.
I still live in Brighton aged 83.
