Website launched attended by the Mayor

By Peter Crowhurst

After many months of hard work the North Laine Community Association's (NLCA) website was finally launched on Monday 7th July at Brighthelm Church and Community Centre. Peter Crowhurst of the North Laine Community Association opened the proceedings with a brief explanation of how the new website was produced, and how it was envisiged it could serve the community.  The Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Garry Peltzer Dunn then performed the ceremony of cutting the ribbon to reveal the website to an audience of local residents and invited guests. Jack Latimer of Community Sites, the company who designed and built the website, followed with a presentation which was a 'guided tour' of the site.

Produced by volunteers
The site has been in the making since a team of volunteers began to receive training in web design in February 2008. Since that time they have produced a site which gives an insight into the past, present and future of the North Laine and to which anyone can register and contribute content in the form of text and / or images or just give comments on what they find on the site.

Local participation
It is to be hoped that the site will increase local participation in community affairs as residents will now be able to give their views on local planning and licensing applications as well as a whole host of different local issues. Agendas and minutes of all NLCA meetings will be available on the site and past residents can give their reminiscences about living in the North Laine in former times.

Looking forward to contributions
The team of volunteers has worked tremendously hard to get to this point but what they have done is hopefully just the beginning.  It is now up to residents and other interested parties to make use of the site, and its success will be judged by how much content and comment is put on to the site in the months and years ahead.
